Electric Blue Acara Size?

I have read several conflicting things about the maximum size of EBA. Some say they get as large as a standard Blue Acara and some say they are smaller. Can some of you that have them give me some more information on this based on your experience?

How long have you had him? Can you post a picture of him? Thanks.

Sure! I have not had mine for too long now, but it has grown fast. I bought it at about 1 in. I have had it for about a month(a little more) and it has doubled in size. Its is now 2 in. Max size, I have heard is 6 in, in the wild these acaras get to 8 in, but not in aquariums. DarkOne is very experienced in EBAs.

I'm definitely not that experienced with EBAs but I've raised a batch of eggs. The dad died but the mom is over a year old and 3.5". The dad was 4.5". I sold off most of the babies but kept 8 and they're 8 months old and range from 1" to 3". From what I've read, they can grow 4-6" in an aquarium.

Is the confusion maybe caused by a mix up with Nannacara anomala electric blue.

I'm not sure, but it could be. I haven't seen them before, but I just looked them up and they do look a lot like a small EBA. I was talking to workers at a few of my LFSs about them. You know how informative that can be sometimes.

EBA is a hybrid of Blue Acara and Powder Blue Ram, believe it or not. Since the Ram is a smaller fish, the hypothesis is that the EBA stays smaller as well, though not as small as Rams.

That's what I read, but I haven't found anyone that could verify their max size. I guess it is possible that you could get a lot of variation from a hybrid like that. I have also heard that they are more peaceful because of the Ram in them.

Absolutely. A friend in the business talked to the people who actually produced the fish. However, they would not say whether it was a pairing, or artificial fertilization in a lab. Not necessarily a patented process, so they wanted to keep it secret.

Last week I was just wondering how they got the "same" electric blue color in three species of fish (Ram, Anomala and Blue Acara.) Interesting.

Actually, there was a naturally blue form of Nannacara anomala that showed up rarely in the hobby, back in the 1980s. I have not seen the current Blue Nannacara form yet, but I would expect it is likely a "manufactured" form rather than the old natural type.
