Eheim 2215 Media

My Eheim 2215 came with coarse, fine and carbon foam/pads. I was thinking of taking the carbon pad out for bio balls or ceramic rings, should I customise the media or leave the stock media in the canister?

I’m only really looking for biological filtration and heavy mechanical filtration

I always chuck the carbon stuff and user ceramic beads personally

I use Eheims on all my tanks. I do not use the carbon pad, it's basically not needed unless you are medicating and need to remove the meds after treatment. Just fill up the void with more media.

Good Luck!

You can never have too much biomedia.

Cheers guys! I think I’ll remove carbon out for Eheim Substrate Pro, how do I know how much I need?

Just put as much as your filter will reasonably hold, there's no magic amount or anything. Even a small amount of beads can grow enough bacteria to run a big tank but you can never have too much like the others said

I would use the stock foam pads + the SubstratPro it came with. Very quality stuff.

Maybe add a couple layers of Polyfil batting in lieu of the carbon pad.

The carbon pad is very thin. Just removing that won't give you much extra room for bio-media. In my 2215 I removed the carbon pad and the fine white pad underneath it. I found that the white pad clogs up quite quickly. That allowed for the addition of an extra coarse blue pad. So from bottom up I have:

- the mech media
- 2 coarse blue pads
- SubstratePro bio-media

Some people substitute the SubstratePro for additional blue or white pads.

Agree, I forgot about the white pad. Good catch.

Besides what it comes with, I picked up a 2L box to top mine off with.

Cheers! I’ll definitely go for the SubstratPro

Sweet! How good of a job do you think the 2215 does for mechanical filtration?

I think the Eheim Classics do a good job of all types of filtration including mechanical. The pads work well and there's no bypass. They don't have very high flow rates though so you need to ensure that you have good circulation in the tank.
