Eco Complete - Root Rot

I’m keeping a 20 gallon long tank, trying to do a healthy planted aquarium. I’m noticing several plants roots rotting under the Eco Complete substrate. Any ideas why this is happening? Have the new Fluval 3.0 planted tank light, dosing liquid CO2, and dosing liquid Aqueon plant fertilizer since it doesn’t have copper and I plan to introduce shrimp.

I’ve never heard of that before, but I see it’s possible. Which plants rotted? How much of the substrate do you have?

From what I know, roots can rot from there being anaerobic pockets in the substrate. But those usually only form in sand substrate.

2-3” substrate. The Madagascar Lace bulb is rotting. The ReinekkI is rotting. Dwarf hairgrass looks “ok”.

Can you post a picture of them? They aren’t melting are they?

I think it’s orovably independent of the substrate. Also, the aqueon fert is really low in macronutrients and so is eco-complete. Shrimp are fine with fertilizers that have copper, it’s not enough to harm them.
