Easiest to use canister filter for 55 gallon

Any recommendations? I have always used HOB filter. But my catfish is non stop messing with the filter and has twice cause it to stop working.

Can anyone recommend a canister filter they use and love? I'm sort of apprehensive about making the change but he's a determined catfish and just loves to rest on/near the filter way too much. It's a 55 gallon Aqueon tank that has been up since July 2021.

Stocking is 4 silver dollars, feather fin catfish and approx 20 guppies

I use a Fluval 407 on a similar sized tank. No issues with mine at all.

I agree about the Fluval. I use a 207 on a 29g. I plan on a 407 when I get a 60breeder later this year.
Cleaning / maintenance is simple and it runs quiet. Flow is controlable, so you can easily adjust outflow down to 50% if needed.

My only complaint is that it does not come with a spray bar, which you will have to buy separately if you want to use one. I set it up without a spray bar and found that I didn't really need one, but that will depend on how you set up your tank. Also, some people don't like the hoses which are black and ribbed. I've had no issues related to the hoses in the 2+ years it's been running.

Surely there are other good filters out there, but this is the one I use and recommend.

Hello,

I have always used internal filters until I got my 200L tank. I decided to try a canister filter and got one from All Ponds Solutions (EFX Model).

I have been using it now for just over a month and think it's great. I can not compare to other canister filters as this is my first.

I don't think I will ever go back to a internal filter.

What are the catfish doing to your HOB filter?

I have a Fluval 307 on my 65g that works great.

My 55g has a Marineland Magniflow 360, but with the hoses / intake / spraybar from a different brand. I like the Marineland filter but their hoses and piping is kinda cheap in my opinion.

I really like my old Hydor 600 but they are not made anymore.

I use "cheap" Chinese ones (Jad or Boyu, exactly the same, the name depending where you are I think). I use these because other brands like Fluval cost several times as much here. The Chinese ones are fine, I don't know how long they will last but I have had a couple for about 3 years with no problems, and I could buy several for the price of one Fluval filter.

I use Eheims on all my tanks from the 4+Pro 600 on the 55g down to the 2211 on a 10g. I have tried other brands, but Eheims for me...

Good Luck with whatever you decide to use.

I would say Fluval filters IMO there are of the best quality sure there are others also that are good, but Fluval filters is what i always used. I still have my fluval 303 running on my tank for over 20+ years still working pretty much as the day i got it, it's the old model, but I'm sure the new ones are just as good. I wanted to get a new one but this one is still running fine so i figured I'll keep using this as long as it works good.
