Earthquake in Melbourne

HI Everyone,
Thought I'd share my first earthquake experience with you all.

Last night (my time) around 9pm local, my house shook. It was an interesting sensation, as we typically don't experience seismic events in Melbourne.

At first the household thought it was a big gust of wind, but when it continued (up to 10 seconds), we all looked at each other "earthquake?".

I jumped on Facebook thinking that'll tell me, and sure enough, within minutes, my news feed was flooded.

It was a small one by many standards (only a M5.2, 6 miles deep), but it travelled a long way.

I must admit to thinking, if this keeps up, I'm about to have 66G of salt water burst onto the floor.

Anyway, all is well, thought I'd share.

Oh - and apparently in the movie 2012 (I haven't seen it), the earthquakes started in June..... spooky coincidence

That is really scary and I can totally relate as I had been in quite a few but notably the 1989 quake here in Northern California that was 7.1. Scariest time of my life and I still am afraid even though its common for us to have small ones ( under 5.0 ) every few years.
Glad everyone there was safe

I'm in CT and felt my first earthquake last summer while at work. It was very surreal to feel yourself shake about. I think the quake was centered in Virginia. As long as they stay small like that I could enjoy them, but California can keep their big one

Glad you are ok.
The New Madrid Fault, about 400 miles from here, is expected to let off a big one in the next 20-40 years. The fault appears to have a 200 year or so cycle. The last time it let go ( 1811-1812) it had 4 quakes that were all 7 or higher.

How frightening that must have been for you. I am glad all is well and your fish tank did not explode.

Jwebbe, I remember that one well. Shivered just reading you'd lived through it. I've been a few small earthquakes here and don't envy anyone whose been in larger ones.

I'm happy that you and your tank went unscathed. Is it uncommon to have Earthquakes in your area? Growing up in California we had earthquake drills in school.

I remember that EQ vividly. Scary experience.

Truth be told, it wasn't frightening, or scary.

Interesting would be the best word I can describe it as. We didn't experience violent shaking, but it was enough to sit up and take note.

I actually thought "cool.... wonder if there'll be any after shocks?"

Maybe blissful ignorance to the seriousness of earthquakes

And yes, I was more worried about it destroying fish tanks (go figure)

That would be a little freaky. My first quake was last summer in CR, but we were at the foot of an active volcano, so we didn't realize that it was an earth quake. instead, we were all a little nervous about the people living on the other side of the peak; we thought it'd been another eruption!

So are aquariums "earthquake proof" in general? I'd be interested to know.
I remember hearing about goldfish that survived a bad quake. Goldfish were rescued months later alive.

I'm not sure psalm.

The silicone should be able withstand some movement, but in a tremor, with the full weight of the water etc, I'm not sure how much distrubance would be needed to split the seal....

Maybe some of our LA/CA members have some experience?

I'm in Virginia and that must have been the same one I felt. Was very weird. My Dad didn't even realize we had an earthquake XD

One thing I must say, I would rather have another type of disaster ( hurricane, tornado, etc ) because at least with them you do have some advance warning but with an earthquake, there is none. At least that us common folks can have access to.

Last fall the east coast auffered a medium earthwuake about 4.6. The worse part I was on the fifth story of a building hooking up eletrical wiring in a hot panel.

By my standards it was small even though it was my first just minimal shaking. I did however find out from a friend who was at the beach that people in the water did not feel it

They are very rare here, can only remember 3 in my 42 years. A couple years ago we had a pretty strong one, just getting light out, woke up and thought my house was haunted...lol. knocked some stuff off the shelves but the tank was fine.

Last major one here was a 4.2 about 3 years ago. Happened about 3 minutes after I got out of bed and I knew instantly what it was.
