Dwarf Puffers and Tall Tanks

Hi,

I've currently got five dwarf puffers in a 55 gallon tank. I'm going to move them to another tank so I can use the 55 gallon for other things.

The best tank for me to get would be a tall one, but I can't seem to find out anything on if they're okay in those tanks. In their current tank, they move up and down constantly, so I assume they'll be okay swimming. Will they be able to divide up territory vertically if there's a small footprint or will there be constant fights?

How long have you had them together? How do they interact with each other?

Of course, a longer tank would be preferred over a tall tank but what dimensions are you looking for?

5 can be iffy in a 20 tall, but it really depends on how they interact with one another.

I've had them for several months. They seem to have their own territories in the tank and some lunge for the others when they get close, but I've never seen them actually touch each other. It's planted and decorated, and all that would be moved with them into the new tank.

I don't have the tank yet but I was thinking of something in the 30 gallon range or up.

Edit: Also, they're currently getting fed a bit irregularly because I'm feeding mixed live and frozen and they don't like the frozen and it gets messy, but I've got more live food now so they should be well fed and calmer by the time of the move.

Like a standard 30 gal? Do you have tall plants with broad leaves that they can rest on?

I've got poke-out-the-top tall bamboo, some long-leafed other plants, plus a tall hollow fake tree decoration covered in flame moss and some shell caves. If they're okay with making their territory at different depths, I planned to buy/mold some other caves and stick it to the walls.

That would be cool to see! I would suggest more plants really. Since they are being downgraded, the more dense the vegetation the better. Fake plants work great too.

Well, they'll be getting all the plants of a four foot planted tank crammed in there - if they'll be willing to make territories high/low rather than all fighting over the bottom.

Oh, that should be good then! They aren't picky about where they sleep. Do you know your m/f ratio?

I haven't been able to sex any of them. At least three have very defined territories - two who are big and defend a lot, and one who's small and hides in one of the bamboo stands. Right now they're afraid of the danios they share their tank with, so I'm assuming they're still pretty young.

When you move them, it may take some time before they sort everything out. You may need a back up plan in case it doesn't work out. But from what you've been saying, it may be completely fine
