Dwarf Crayfish...cpo

I just brought home a trio of adorable orange dwarfs....less than 1 inch in size. Does anyone have experience with these guys? I can’t seem to find much in depth info about keeping them.

I have them In QT, a cycled 5 gallon with lots of plants and hiding space for the time being. I will likely keep them on their own and enjoy some breeding assuming I have mixed sexes. I can set up a larger tank if they can stay with multiples of their own.

A 5-gallon is a bit small, and they will commit cannibalism so be careful how many you stock. They are sooooo cute though

I am wondering why 5 gallons is too small. They seem to have plenty of space and have no conflict with each other. Is is a stability of parameters issue? High bioload issue? I am fine upgrading a tank (the 5 is the QT) but it seems like a waste to give these 3 a bigger space.

Crays of any size are messy with their food so you will need a good filter. They are pretty hardy when it comes to water stability, but try your best to keep it steady so they don't get stressed.

They will get territoral and grow a bit bigger, up to 2 inches. I would say 5 gallon is good for now but you may want to invest in a bigger aquarium in the future, especially if you hope to breed them.

I am glad you posted this! I saw some at the LFS yesterday and became curious. They are so adorable. I don't know their care requirements so am unsure if I could keep them. I think they were labeled as "Dwarf Mexican crayfish."

Thanks! I have options for tanks for them, just want to find the best for them.

Yeah they have many labels. They are very cool little guys thus far. I scored them at an auction and can’t wait to learn more about them and hopefully breed to share.
