Dwarf cichlids in a 45 gallon

I was thinking about getting a 45 gallon tank, I wanted to put dwarf cichlids in it how many can I have. Also can I mix and match species of dwarf cichlids or does it have to be a specific number of each.

What kind of dwarf cichlids are you looking at? Rams? Curviceps? Apistogramma? There are many more.

Depending on species you choose you can mix and match but it depends on the species. Would you like pairs, or groups?

 

I don't really care about the species I just don't want a lot of the same kind of fish. I want to groups.

 

What is the dimensions for the tank?

 

36.25 inches x 12.6 inches x 24.8 inches

 

Oh, so in that case I would only do a trio of one species or a pair of one species since the bottom of the tank isn't that long. You might be able to do a quartet.

 

Trio of apistohrammas 1m/2f.
pair of keyholes, bolivian rams, gbrs, golden dwarf cichlids, dwarf flag cichlids, kribs or checker board cichlids.

You could also do 6-8 apistgrammas. For 6 2m/4f. For 7 2m/5f. For 8 3m/5f.

6-8 apistos??? That is wayyyyyyy too much for a area of 36x12. The pairs could work,

 

One trio or 1m/3f or 2m/2f for every 25 - 30 gal. It also depends on the species aggressio. But I do see your point as it is a tall tank. Because it is a 45 gal I was assuming it to have a bigger foit print. 4-5 apistos then. 2m/3f.

If the op got a 55 gal 6-8 might work.

 

I would do a trio of Keyhole Cichlids and pair of Bolivians. But I'm bias because I have Keyholes and Bolivians in my 55. You could then do a school of 8-10 tetra or rasbora, plus a shoal of 8-10 cory cats or kuhlie loaches to finish out the stock.

 

I feel like 36x12 isn't enough space for 3 keyholes and 2 bolivians but if you brought it down to 2 keyholes and 2 bolivians that could work

 

Keyholes swim in all water levels so 3-4 wiuld be fine.

 

Keyholes only get to 4 inches, dominant males up to 5 and tend to be shy without a small group. My group of 6 in my 55 spend most of their time in the upper two thirds of the tank while the group of 4 Bolivians stay in the bottom third. Works out well and they all get along just fine.

 

Someone is giving me a 50 gallon tank so they wouldn't be going in a 45 anymore. How many can go in the 50 gallon. I'm not sure on the dimensions I haven't seen the tank yet. I like the apistohrammas and the keyhole cichlids.

4-5 keyholes. 5 might be pushing it tho. 4 will easily fit tho.

I would do 4 keyholes and a pair a apistos to start. IMO it's always good to have either a pair, or 4 or more dwarf cichlids. I never recommend 3 personally. If you have one male and female pair off and have one outcast it will be the solo fish to be picked on the most. If you have 4 cichlids, 2 pair off, and two never have mates it kind of even things out if that makes sense. There won't be just one outcast getting picked on all the time.

 

It is recomended to have a trio of apistos. One male will breed with srveral females.
