Dwarf Baby Tears Dying

Hey guys. I have a 7.5 gallon planted tank with CO2 and ADA Amazonia. I have had explosive growth with my stem plants and have trimmed them, but my dwarf baby tears have not been working out.

Set up the tank 2 weeks and 5 days ago, currently still in the nitrite spike stage of the cycle. I am cycling with pure ammonia.

I took out the first round of dwarf baby tears and then replanted, and the next day or so all of a sudden some cobweb stuff was on each of the bits of dwarf baby tears, and it looks to have killed them? I attached pics of when I planted them to how they look now. When I planted them I also started dosing Aquarium Co-ops general fertilizer, one pump, to try and help it.

PH is 6-6.5. I have medium-high led lights pushed down to almost right above the tank too. Temp is 79. Could that be it? What do you think happened/how should I proceed?

This is why I dry start my carpets, much higher rate of success.

What is your CO2 in ppm? Can you link me to your lighting?

I’ve honestly struggled with calculating it. Is the best way the chart of KN and PH? Also, the tank I bought was from my local fish store that is part of ADA and is an Asian brand that I’m not sure what the name is. I find out from my LFS tomorrow.

I’ve just been using a drop checker.

Just an approximation based on your drop checker is fine.

I cannot find the brand of the light and there are no similar products affiliated with ADA.

I can find it out tomorrow, but it’s high light.

Respectfully, we are unfortunately unable to definitively say low medium or high light without using a PAR meter on each of our individual setups. A light could even be high light on one tank and medium/low on another. Yours does not look like high light, though it could just be the photo.
Dwarf baby tears are very very hard to grow if conditions are not perfect. If this doesn't work out, I recommend micranthemum monte carlo, which looks similar but is a lot easier.

I am going to follow your advice, just ordered some monte carlo! Thank you. I underestimated the difficulty of growing the HC, some internet advice has it as "hardy and beginner-friendly," lol. Also, I apologize for coming off as unappreciative/unreceptive to experienced advice. Going to find out what the brand of the tank/light is and I'll let you guys know.

Don't worry, I didn't get that vibe at all!!
HC is so commonly sold that maybe people have gotten the impression that it's easy to grow! What's difficult is not the plant itself but getting all the equipment and conditions required to sustain it.

So my tank is a 6.8 gallon Aqua Japan tank. (Model is AJ-40). Height is 10.2”. The light is about 11.5 inches from the carpet plants, about 3.5-3.75 inches from water surface, depending on how much has evaporated. So that would put my required lumens/wattage at at least 13ish watts for medium light plants right? And I would need around 25/26 watts for high light plants like HC yeah?

Unfortunately WPG isn't an effective way to guess-timate the intensity of LED aquarium lighting. When selecting my lighting I go based on PAR and luminosity.

EDIT: Given that it is a stock light and that I cannot find the specs for it other than it being 10.5W, it is difficult to say, but considering many places classify it as a refugium light I'm going to put it on the low end of the spectrum. If you want to do carpets, all I can suggest is pick something less demanding than HC or upgrade the stock lighting.

I picked up the same type of light but a 15W and I’m going to have them as a dual light setup. Also, I’m going to try Monte Carlo this time, is supposed to get to my place in 2 days! Think that should be okay?

Are there any mentions on the packaging of the light regarding PAR, Lumens, etc?

Theoretically you should be OK.

It’s all in Japanese :/. I’ll see how it grows and if it doesn’t do well I’ll get a light fixture that I can get that info on.
