I finally got the nerve to post my own tank thread

After some tank-compacting I'm left with a spare 7 gallon aquarium. My plans:

Fish:

2x Killifish (don't know what kind yet)
4x Asian stone catfish (if I can get them)

Plants:

Dwarf hairgrass
Hornwort
Pennywort (?)
Bacopa (?)
(I need more ideas; help!)

Specs

7 gallon
filter - 155 gph
heater - 25w
Full spectrum 8w LED light (in transit)
1 inch osmocote soil, capped with 1 inch gravel (black)
Osmocote aquatic tabs - no other ferts/co2 for now

I'll keep y'all posted. With pictures. This will sort of transition from a build to a tank thread, so please don't move it.

This is the tank, as of now. As you can see, it's very much a work in progress

You should make a build thread! I'd follow that

My light arrived on Monday! I'm probably going to buy some dwarf hair grass (tissue culture) tomorrow. Any advice?

I would really recommend a CO2, even if DIY. Mine never spread unless I had some CO2 in there. But following with interest.

Following! This sounds like a cool tank with some more unusual fish in it, I can’t wait to see how it progresses!

How do I do a DIY co2 setup? I'm broke(ish)

Also really interested about the Asian Stone Catfish! Have not seen any in Sydney before, I'm sure whether fish stores are able to bring them in at all!

I would be happy with just the killifish tbh. I want to breed them.

Can either do yeast and sugar or critic acid with baking soda.
This may start you off:

I love the filter you got in there... from big W - had a similar looking one in the past until some sand got in there... was a great filter!

I don't think so. Never seen it available.

IMO, if you want best bang for buck, stick with dry ferts. Aquagreen sells some as a fairly reasonable price (a few grams last a while, especially in a small tank) which may be right up your alley?

I've got osmocote tabs but I don't know if they've got all the micros. I'll check tomorrow. Can't be bothered going downstairs.

I got the first ingredient for my co2 setup today. Bakers' yeast. I looked for brewers' yeast but couldn't find any. I'm concerned though. On the packet, it says it has emulsifier and ascorbic acid. Should I be concerned?

Yep, the emulsifier and acid - which is basically vit C - will not make it into the tank if set up correctly... Also used it without issues.

I recently switched from yeast to citric acid/baking soda and it works SO much better for me. You can make the switch pretty cheap, I think my kit was like 14 bucks on Amazon. Yeast works ok, but it doesn't last as long, and it's a lot harder to get consistency with it.

I'll try it once I run out of yeast.

I read a post a while back where a guy said something about using wine yeast + juice and then getting free wine at the end. Not sure if it was real or not but that would be awesome lol

An update:

I went out and bought a check valve, diffuser, airline hose and taps for my setup. I also got the yeast/sugar/water mix in a bottle done. Here is the setup:

If I wasn’t cheap I would totally get dwarf hair grass

Nice! I can’t wait to see it finished. I’ll be following along.

You should try hydro sp. japan. That would be cool, maybe have it hang out of the tank.

This is so much more in-depth than I gat in my tank threads, I’m like,“I have this thingy full of water and I’m gonna put little fishies in it.”

bryangar that plant looks really nice! I would grow it on the hardscape though (if possible) since the carpet will be dwarf hair grass.

It can definitely be grown on the hardscape. It’s basically the miniature version of pennywort.
