Is there a mill near by? If so, leave it. If not, then go ahead and soak it in a bucket of water for several weeks, changing the water periodically

Just give it a good scrubbing under running tap water with a stiff bristle brush and it should be fine. If it won't sink then soak it in water. Alison

I scrubbed mine. Soaked in water 2 days. Scrubbed again and boiled it. Then let it dry out two days in the sun. Then I put it in my aquarium. 6 months later no problems..... unlike wood I've purchased from lps.

Won't work.

Soak for a long time. Typical soak is 3months. You can get by with a month soak and daily scrubbing.

Others are baking and chemical treatment. Although it poses risks

Pour boiling water on it since he can't put it in a pot. It works the same, he'll just use more water

I had one that was too big to boil also. That one I just scrubbed, no soaps. Rinsed and scrubbed again and dried it three days. Scrubbed one more time and put it in my aquarium. It got white mold spots a couple times and put a brownish color in my aquarium for a few weeks. Didn't change my levels on my test kit. Just did a extra couple water changes and it stopped.

The idea of boiling a piece is to keep the temperature higher than a certain point to essentially cleave the bacteria. Pouring hot water will not keep the temperature long enough to kill bacteria inside

He could find a metal tub and heat it with coals or something
