ive been cycling my 50 gallon tank for a few days now and the large pieces of driftwood I ordered arrived today. If it ok to put driftwood and live plants in a tank that is still cycling?

Yes it is okay to add live plants and driftwood.

I usually boil my driftwood to sterilize it before I put in the tank as a safety measure.

Boiling will also help remove the tannins, if you don't want your tank water to turn a bit brown. I boiled my pieces for a few hours each and didn't see any significant tannin leaching.

they were dryed out when I got them. I just poured boiling water over them and am soaking the 2 small pieces right now. the large manzanita piece I just rinsed casuse I don't have a container big enough for it. my water here is quite hard so some tannin might be a good thing?

I have hard water too. But I always use the drip method for introducing fish.
