Does this look normal for a 55 gallon?

So recently bought a 55 gallon standard filled with about 50 gallons and noticed the side panel glass was off by maybe 1/8 inch on one corner, tank doesn’t appear to be bowing at all but didn’t know whether to be concerned about the one corner of the tank attached will be a photo
It appears to actually be less then 1/8in since the glass is about 1/4in thick

It looks like the corner of one pane of glass has been damaged. If the damage were at the upper corner, I would be less concerned as the water pressure would be lower. Since the damage is in the lower corner, the structural integrity of the tank has been compromised. If the tank is located in an unfinished basement where 50 gallons of water on the floor won't cause significant damage then the risk of failure might be acceptable. If the tank is located in your primary living space, failure of the tank could cause hundreds of dollars in damage to carpets, flooring, subflooring and furniture.

The damaged tank would be fine for alternative uses such as a hamster cage, reptile or amphibian habitat or terrarium. IMHO, the risk is just to great to fill it completely with water.

If you live near a Petco, they currently have 55 gallon tanks on sale for 1/2 price ($74.99). Consider the purchase of a new tank to be cheap insurance. If you want to take advantage of the sale, do not wait as they do not last long before they go back to to the normal $150.

This is the sale I took advantage of and sadly it was the only one, my 20 gallon has a similar problem but I haven’t had any leaks as of yet, it seemed like such a minor thing but every pane sits flush besides this one by like I said less that 1/8 of an inch

Yeah that’s a manufacture’s defect. That corner isn’t flush with the other. That tank should be returned. Have them order you another.

A 20 gallon tank is less than half the volume of a 55 gallon. Thus, there is less than half the risk if the tank were to fail. If the 20 gallon is a 20 long rather than a 20 high, the lower height further reduces the risk as their is less water pressure on the joint.

I would return it. A new tank should not be defective, even if on sale.
