Does sand choke out plant roots?

I finally did it! I decided to use natural coloured sand, with Fluval stratum on the bottom layer. What I did was I took 50% of the water out, put the fish in the water I took out, take out another 40%. Then start scooping the gravel out. Then once the tank has nothing in it I put the stratum and then added sand. I made a nice scape with the hardscape ( I don’t know if I should even call it and aquascape, but I tried). Then filled 50% back up and put the fish in. Then add another 50% of clean tap water in. And then you’re done!
