Does it matter what order your filter media goes in?
Background: I have an aquaclear50, and I love the thing, but recently, the filter basket has been popping out of place and raising up. My bio media (Ceramic balls it came with) is being pushed out of the water. This happened last week and the whole bag of bio media was pushed out of water.
Now, if you know about that filter, you know that it comes with a sponge for mechanical filter, a thing of carbon (that I tossed almost immediately) and the ceramic balls. Because I tossed the carbon, I just put another small layer of mechanial filtration.
Here is my question:
In order to prevent the bio from surfacing, and killing the good bacteria, can I just sandwich the bio media between the sponges? Meaning: Small layer of mechanical, bio level, and then the big sponge it came with.
Or, alternatively, can anyone help me with a solution to it popping out of place and shifting up?
OR...should I just get rid of that small layer of mechanical filtration that I added so the bio sits lower?
