Just a poll to see how many people here rent or own there modem/router. I personally own so we don't have to pay $10 a month. Now to figure out how to add a poll... Lol

Own. Didn't know you can "rent"
Actually we have 5 routers in our house - 3 on one end of the house and 2 on the other. My phone / tablet /devices change connections depending on where I am in the house. That gets a bit annoying.

You can rent, the company give you everything then they just add a fee to your bill...

6? How big is your house or are your providing wifI to the whole neighborhood? Lol.
Yea once we realized we that we were paying $10 a month we decided to own. That $120 a year. Butc comcast doesn't make it easy on you to switch to your own...

Our house is not that big ( 2,100 sq ) my neighbors are all jealous because they say they can see the 3 to 4 bars in their homes - its a "man" thing since Mr. Junne works for Facebook as an engineer so he has to have the best/strongest in the hood.

We have Comcast Xfinity X1 - no problems using our own.

My neighbor does all the time. Thing is, the password is super long with upper lower case, numbers, etc
I DON'T even know it to be honest with you................................

Lol, when I had the xfinity provided gateway the password was like 15 numbers and letters. One thing I don't like is that xfinity if you rent there boxes they give out xfinity hotspots to other people, and you don't even know is doing it.

My hubby works in network security so all of our passwords are hard-to-remember ones and impossible so I don't even ask! As long as it work, I don't need to know what it is.

There are numerousstudiesto support this and what's more the companies who provide wifI or use it, like cell phone companies admit it, its in the paperwork that noone reads that comes with phones. Lol

Yup, I own my own. It also functions as a nightlight. Those blinky lights are like a lighthouse. =D

When I go without the internet for over a few hours I get really cranky. So if those blinky lights aren't on, I'm about to freaking lose my mind.

I would love to see some of these studies. I work in the wireless telecommunications field and everything I have read says the amount of exposure that one typically gets is very nominal and there is very little likelihood of any health concerns. No different then standing in the kitchen when you run the microwave, or the millions of rf signals that cover your cell phone reception virtually everywhere you go.

Here is a link to some info that I found.....

Here is another...

https://www.forbes.com/sites/fayeflam/2015/01/19/the-science-of-wi-fi-and-cancer-dont-fear-the-router/

As for the OP's original poll and question, I rent mine and here is why. It is only $6 extra on my bill a month. That's $72 a year, or roughly the cost of buying your modem. But with renting it, I am covered should anything happen to it. I have charter cable and internet, and I bet a bazillion dollars that if I had my own router, and I had any internet issues the first thing they would say is, "it's probably your router causing the issue". This way, everything is theirs, if anything happens or is not working, I can call and get it fixed for free and possibly get a discount on my monthly bill for any extended outage. Also, I like to request a new router every year or 2, as I'm sure technology is constantly upgrading. They switch it out with a new one whenever I ask, all free of charge.

All in all, it's about the same price for me, so since price isn't a deciding factor, the ease and peace of mind of knowing I can call and get it fixed without them telling me that my router is broken, is worth it to me.

I'm on Charter, too. I have our telephone service, internet, and cable TV through them. As far as I know, they will not let you buy your own phone modem unit. However, I do use my own wifI router.

The modems/routers of comcast are really low quality and don't let you receive all the service(wifI speed wise)your paying for.

Not saying its diff from standing in front of a microwave, I wouldnt do that either. Hey what would a medical systems employee know about health ?

I have Charter. They make me rent my cable box. I wanted to buy my own so I could get one that wasn't like 100 years old but nooooo.

Maybe they'll start doing that with modems and routers.

Tell them you are having issues and want a new one. They will switch it out for free. I've done it a bunch over the years with charter.
