So I thought school fish would be more fun.

It seems that while some school fish such as Congo Tetra love to chase each other around the tank, many school fish spend long period of time simply stick together doing nothing.

Well, if you have 10 non school fish, at least all 10 of them would be doing 10 different things. School fish, either the whole school is playing, or the whole school is not doing a thing.

So which one do you prefer?
Which one would you pick if you have to pick one?

I really only keep Cichlids, and a few Guppies, so I'll have to say non-schooling. In saying this, I don't think there are many more impressive sights in the hobby than a huge school of Neons!

I don't mind schooling fish. I think my 8 neons are adorable They don't all stick together. Most of the time they are poking around doing their own thing, either by themselves or with one other buddy.

it's non-schooling fish for me... however, if you put shoaling in the poll, I would vote for that! I love my endlers and cories!

i'm not sure I can vote! I like my schoolers....I have 15 pristellas and 10 kerrI tetras in my 75. the pristellas are like vash said, doing nothing but sitting together usually....they aren't super active. they kerris are much more active and fun to watch. as are corys....they as so cute imo.

on the other hand, I have a honey gourami, who I find really fun to watch. he and the single cory in my 20 are friends and chase each other and play. I also have bettas.....which are very attached to their owners and will dance and beg every chance they get lol.

maybe i'd have to have more non-schooling fish to really make a decision. I might be getting some rams......

For me it depends on tank size - in a large tank with large schools - 20+ fish - I prefer schools - in a smaller tank with schools of less than 10 - non schooling.

Many people don't get that technical, especially with such a generalized question. I think you would have been safe to vote schooling

I have many more schooling fish than non-schoolers, so I voted schoolers. I enjoy watching individual fish as it interacts with others of it's kind, as well as the other species in the tank. I also like watching them as a group, whether they're doing anything or not.

I do love all 13 of my tetras! They are fun to watch and they don't always school, they will sometimes be in groups of two or three doing their own thing....watching them feed is awesome! All I see are these silvery blurs dart all over the water. It's nuts!

That's a hard one... I would say non-schooling fishes for me, but I do love my two cories though.

Once, years ago, I had a very strange school: a feeder fish I rescued from a piranha tank, a fancy guppy, and a swordtail. The three fish went everywhere together and avoided everyone else. LOL. Wherever one went, the others would follow!!

So... how about non-schooling fish that school?

I like non schooling fish better, gouramis and bettas are my fave!

I like them both. There is nothing like a huge school of cardinal tetras for a computer desktop background, and it will always cheer up your day. I am going to put a large school of cardinals in my 75 gallon tank (Around 50). Otherwize, I like bettas and guppies and such, it's a toss up. Small tank= Non schooling, Large tank = Schooling.

Both. Cardinals are just beautiful to watch but non-schooling fish have more personality in general.
My tank is small so I have to be picky and size does matter!

So, for the time being, schooling fish gets my vote

I definitely have to say non schooling because my favorite thing about fish is their personality and in a school they all seem to take on the same personality as a group, they all eat the same way, act the same way, swim the same way, etc. I've always thought that non schooling fish(escpesially large fish) show their own personality more so they feel like more of a pet than just a decoration

In my opinion, they need each other to be great. If you don't have one with the other, tanks can get boring, unless they are species only tanks. I.e. A pair of rams with a school of tetras, and so on.

I say non-schooling partly because of being a male betta owner but also because non-schooling fish are more independent and individual. +1 on Crazyboutfish.

schooling for me loves to observe them when a perfect shoal forms

I love how the fish swim together in the small groups all around the tank, but It's also good to have fish that swim around by themselves, keeps it interesting

A dwarf gourami surounded by neons. I choose the third option, shoaling. I like the way my danio and white clouds shoal. They still group to gather every now and then but are individual for the most part. I also like non schooling fish as a centerpiece like a rose in the center of a babyybreath bouquet. Schooling fish are also need to bring life and action to the tank.

I prefer schooling fishes in a bigger tank because they are more fun to watch with all the empty spaces.
