Can't say that I am.
My favorite band is System of a Down - which is pretty far from rap.

Not a fan of most gangsta rap. There are a few rap acts (mostly ones who aren't just about "bustin' caps" and such) that catch my interest. 50 Cent definitely isn't one of them.

No, I really despise rap. My school is full of gangsters and what not. I don't harp on the famous rappers really, but I harp on the kids at school who wear their pants around their knees and have shirts that go to the floor, that just really bugs me... especially the freshmen.

I do not like any form of rap music. I have a wide variety of tastes, but I have never found anything in rap to like. I don't even think it should qualify as music, but that's another argument....

Yeah....there's a lot of rockers here on Fishlore.

Hey I grew up in the 80's, but our music of choice was classic rock. My prized possession in my youth was my Led Zeppelin boxed set.

I don't like 50 Cent, but I do like Kanye West. Though he is a "bit" egotistical, I find it refreshing that someone claims their own effort for the success of their work, and not only God-given talent. Good Alt-Rap: "Say Hey" by Michael FrantI & Spearhead. I'm more into that than those, as someone said, "bustin' caps."

I hate rap, in all forms and all rappers. I'm a rocker! Flogging Molly! (though you shouldn't do that to a molly)

Long hair? Check.
Plays air-drums and headbangs way too often? CHECK!

Sorry Matt, but looks like the rockers on Fishlore are taking over this thread!

You know, PinkFloydPuffer, there are plenty of folks who said the same thing about Floyd, and Zeppelin, and rock and roll in general (not to mention each form that followed from that) not qualifying as music. ;D

Edit: Oh, yeah, and this is the third time in half an hour I've had to merge two of your back-to-back posts. Please use the multi-quote button or I'll have to send the men in black suits. ;D

How can you guys hate rap? It's not all profanty and whatnot. I'm a fan of rap, I love its flow. I don't like 50 cent, he's too gangsta. I love rock too, it's so energetic.

I focus more on the MUSICAL aspect of any genre. And with rap, there isn't much music. It's someone talking very fast to a synthetic beat.

Yup, among other reasons (social, cultural), hiphop and rap hold no musical weight for me.

Not necessarily. There is melody, harmony, and rhythm (okay, the last is a given) in a lot of rap.

I don't think so.
It's nothing compared to, IMO, real music.
I was a vocal student & band student in MS & HS, so rap does not hold to the definition of "music" to me.

Then they don't know what music is

And, I start writing the response before someone else posts that I want to respond to, so then I respond to them.... I do not know how to both edit and quote at the same time. The buttons don't seem to work that way

Oh... so that's who those guys are that I keep seeing following me in the shadows......

I like rap, it has a good flow. It's not my favorite for sure but it is fun to clean house too..lol..50 Cent has some good songs but like I said not my favorite.

You know what's good to clean to?
The Beatles.
Just clean & sing as loud as you can.

I don't think you can edit and quote at the same time, so that's fine. It was just odd that it was three times in the same day and I've never seen you back-to-back post before this.

Amanda: I'm not saying you should like or listen to it, I'm just saying there is melody and harmony in quite a bit of rap.
Melody is: "the succession of single tones in musical compositions, as distinguished from harmony and rhythm."
and Harmony is: "the simultaneous combination of tones, esp. when blended into chords pleasing to the ear; chordal structure, as distinguished from melody and rhythm."

Since much of rap music involves tones that are more than simple beats, and utilizes overlapping tones that are more than simple beats, it has melody and harmony. Maybe not to everyone's tastes, and definitely not always in the vocals (but sometimes even then), but it's there. ;D

YES! And Procol Harum for me, my favorite band. They're like my ultimate sing-a-long band for when I'm driving.

Ok, ok.
Melody & harmony are there.
But not from REAL instruments (most of the time).
Some synthesizers just don't qualify for me.

I know you've heard them though (everyone has heard A Whiter Shade of Pale-id link the youtube but it keeps opening up a video window instead of just the link). Unfortunatly most arern't familiar with their other works and I'd say you can't go wrong with any of the first 8 albums. Each one is quite different and some stronger than others in some aspects.
