hi

I recently picked up about 20 wild shrimps while hiking in the mountain.
They are doing great in a 5 gallon tank with guppy frys and ramshorn snails.

I noticed one of the shrimp was carry alot of eggs, but I havent seen any babies.

Can guppy fry or ramshorn snail eat the baby shrimps or the shrimp eggs?

Thanks.

p.s. Two years ago, I first saw many shrimps in a pond in the mountain close to my home.
Last year, I saw just a few. Recently, I saw alot of shrimp. So, they are breeding in this pond. I took some home.
This is up in the mountain, so this must be fresh water. So, does this rule out it being Amano shrimp? Anyway, I want to see baby shrimps.

I don't know what shrimp this is,looks a maybe like an amano so maybe they won't reproduce in your water. But im no expert, t's really neat that you found some in the wild.

nothing could eat the shrimp eggs (unless they ate the mother ig) because the eggs stay under the mother shrimp's tail. Ramshorn snails wouldn't eat a shrimplet (unless they were dead) but guppy fry might, depends how big or hungry they are.

The fact that you collected them wild in California makes them NOT Amanos. There are two freshwater shrimps listed for California, both in genus Syncara: pacifica and pasadenae. The first is listed as Endangered by the Us Fish and Wildlife Service, can't find the status of the second. My guess would be that both are Endangered. S. pacifica males and juveniles are transparent while females are brown with a tan stripe. Max size is just under 2 inches.

I am sure the Guppies ate the young, surprised that they're not harrassing the adults.

I think he’s located in Asia. It’s in his profile :). Unless of course they’ve bought California and moved it . Which also wouldn’t surprise me :).
Also nice find and interesting shrimp. I’m guessing your location in Asia may help in identifying them.

I am in southeast China. To get to this pond in the mountain, it takes about 2 hour slow hike. Around here, alot of retired old people hike these mountain everyday. They build primitive rest areas. I guess it is possible an aquarist introduced shrimps into this pond many years ago. This pond is near one of those rest area. The temperature in the winter is around 10 deg C. So, these shrimp can survive the cold. There was also alots of small black loach-like fishes ( up to 3 inches long).

Btw, I use sea shells as hiding places for the shrimps. These is also a bunch of pearl weed on the right. Is this enough protection?

The shrimp look fine. Though I think the sea shell may make the water harder and raise the ph. What are you feeding them?

My tap water is soft. These sea shells havenot raised the GH, yet. I just ordered some liquid GH booster.

I am feeding the shrimps mostly Housai micro pellet fish food. The shrimps seem to like it. I also tried fresh vegetables, but they dont seem to like it.

I could have sworn I saw California on his profile. I didn't think my eyes were that bad! I don't have a lot of luck with shrimps and crayfish. Sounds like you're doing fine!

Keeping shrimp alive the first few days is the hardest thing with shrimp. You sound like you have it under control pretty well. Some more plants would be good.
