Do my plants look okay? Any advice?

Hi,
I’ve recently started a 10g aquarium that I’m going to be primarily stocking with shrimp! I started it about 6 weeks ago (plants have been in there since the start) and the plants look rough. I’ve never kept plants before so I’m looking for some advice. Or maybe the plants are just fine?
I don’t remember the exact names but I have:
- 2 anubius
- 1 Java fern
- 1 I think bucephalandra might be wrong though
- a few wisteria
- a few dwarf saggataria

Sorry if my spelling is wrong on any of these. I’ve been using Seachem flourish and flourish excel since I got them, as well as the Seachem root tabs. I’m also using Seachem flourite gravel. I’m using an Aqueon light for plants(not sure what kind exactly).
Any advice? Here’s some pictures

Hi

Most plants in the hobby have their leaves in the air in nature. Some flooding appears, but this usually is a gradual change. Dry <-> rain season. Also parts of the leaves can be below water, but some remain above water, The latter ones are still able to catch CO2 and distributes this in the plant. New submersed growth usually has some adaptations to cope with the much lower CO2 concentrations in water.

But what do we do?

We drown plants instantly. It's sheer torture to them.

In conjunction, we blast brights lights at them, which turns on their inner machinery like crazy, without giving it anything to process (the C in CO2). It's trying really hard to capture more CO2 to match the machinery. This turns on a conflict as it needs to use up resources to produce a certain enzyme that allows it to cope with the low CO2 influx. To create such an enzyme it sacrifices on other requirements.

So...... for the love of plants, dim your lights. Plants hardly need any light to be healthy.

Regarding all those fertilizers, it's pretty useless. Most are present in tap water, so by conducting water changes, you offer plants pretty much all of the minerals they need. In tanks without fish, and especially as plant density increases, you probably need to dose some extra nitrogen, potassium, and maybe phosphates and magnesium.

Also, your plants suffer from algae. Don't worry about fertilizers too much when it comes to algae. Algae hardly need fertilisers and hardly need CO2 in order to prosper.

But most of them sure love bright lights.

Thanks for the answer!

Sounds like a lot of the internet goes overboard with all these requirements. I’ve just done all these things because that’s what I’ve been told

So sounds like I really just need to turn the lights down and give them time to recover? Just want to make sure I’m getting the right message lol.

All problems in our hobby are caused by technology. All solutions offered are technology driven also. It's an industry, you know ;)

Yes, as long as your plant density remains low, you should dim it. When the density goes up, leaves are green, no algae in sight, you can increase brightness.

Duration does not matter. Well, people can see an effect, but this is because duration is related to intensity. Controlling the light intensity is controlling the tank's biology.

Awesome, makes sense! I’ll turn down that light. Thanks for your help!
