Do I Need A Bubbler For Community Fish In A Betta Tank?

I know bubbles can be beneficial for oxygenation, but bettas don't like strong currents, and I've found that my past bettas never liked them. I have a 40 gallon, 48" long tank that I'm setting up as a betta sorority. While bettas have labyrinth organs and would be fine without it, I was wondering- do I still need to get a bubbler for the community fish I'll be adding?

If there is sufficient surface agitation from your filter then no, it is not necessary.

I'd do Cardinal Tetras and a Clown Pleco instead as they are more temperature compatible with a betta. My suggestion is to also add the bettas last.

I don't think my surface agitation will be too much, since I was gonna fill the tank right up to the filter to REDUCE the agitation for the bettas. But I could probably try keeping the water level lower, and if the bettas hate it then get a bubbler?

Yes, I was planning to add the bettas last. You know, Cardinal Tetras a a pretty good idea! Thanks! I've really got my heart set on an albino BN pleco though, and I've heard they can withstand variable water conditions pretty well. But I'll keep that in mind. Thanks!

Any agitation at all will help with gas exchange, so long as it isn't completely stagnant. Female bettas can handle flow much better than males due to their short fins.

I have an unbaffled aquaclear 70 and a bubble volcano on my 55 gallon betta tank. They play in them at times. When they were in the 75 it had an aquaclear 110. As long as part of the tank is low flow they will be fine.

That’s why I like spray bars. Easier to adjust for proper agitation and doesn’t cause large flow.

Oh, smart. Yeah, that totally makes sense. I guess I'll have to get my dad to help me make one, haha.

Okay, thank you! Good to know.
