Do I Just Not Understand?

Okay, so I started with three Neons in a five gallon with a Betta. Was very quickly informed that was wrong.
So I moved them to my 20 gallon betta tank and added six more, because they're a schooling fish. For a total of 9.
But here's my question, when I think of schooling fish I think like the fish in Finding Nemo that swim together. My Neons do not. They seem to have paired up and swim around in twos. Do I just have a wrong mindset? Or are my Neons weird?
(I have been told a hundred times that bettas and Neons are not temp compatible but they've been living fine together for five months now.)

From what I've heard they only school every once and awhile but I'm probably wrong :|

Once they get comfortable in a tank, they don't school, which is a good thing. When they're schooling it means they are in distress.

Ohhhh that's good to know. When I first added the new six, the three huddled together, and the six huddled together. But since then, I've NEVER seen them school. Even during water changes, I guess they just don't care

Yep, they get used to water changes, especially when it's done regularly.

Most of the time weekly, though sometimes I miss a week. But pretty much all my fish are used to it. My goldfish will headbutt my hand or follow my hand around.
