Do fish go through puberty?

Yes. That's my question. Do fish go through puberty?

I have a betta fish, Coconut. Since I've purchased her, her colors have intensified. Yesterday, I realized the scales on her face were turning blue. Lately she's been different. When the filter is off she swims slower. When it's on she overflows with energy. I just recently began lighting candles around a foot away from her tank and she seems fascinated by the new change and darts as close to it as possible to watch me light it. You can tell she's both confused and excited.

But a change I've realized the most is that she's chasing her reflection a lot more and "harder" then usual. She just recently began flaring at it and tires herself out in a way in which she needs more air so she takes a "sip" from the surface. Also she like to play in the filter flow so I have the filter in a way that it's a little more "violent" in the back. But most recently she's been able to sort of sustain it.

Basically what I'm asking it are these changes in behavior signs of a "fish puberty"?

Thanks!

I think they just get mature or old enough to breed. Not sure though

Hmmm maybe puberty isn't quite the right word.. but like all fauna, fish go from young to juvenile before adult.

Things like changes in colour, body shape and behaviour could be likened to puberty as they mature I guess.

Bettas will change color through their whole life unless they are a solid color but even they will change colors occasionally. It is the marveling in them

They do not go through puberty in the same sense of humans but they do have changes but physically and in behavior when they reach sexual maturity.

Puberty in humans is defined as capable of reproduction/sexual maturity. So yes, fish do this at a certain point of their lives. But there are other aspects to it as well such as hormones and body changes, which also happen to fish (and animals).

So while it sounds strange, I would not see it as inaccurate to label it as puberty. Puberty is not a term exclusive to humans.
