Do you know what? Maybe you don't even see these buttons until you have a certain number of posts to your name. Do you not see a horizontal bar chart on top of this topic? With the results of the poll so far? If you don't, it could be that you don't have access yet. It will come soon if that's the case.

Shame, I needed the political support!

try downloading a program called Gimp - it will let you save your picture resized to be smaller.

Shame, I needed the political support!

political, eh? well then, I say fish have the right to fart and if they want to, then they should not be prohibited from freedom of passing gas by genetic intolerance!

Off course fish fart.....that's why we use the airstones......... :-\, right?

a-c-t-u-a-l-l-y........... Corys fart. They have the ability to dash to the surface and take a gulp of air. The air is then moved down the intestines and absorbed. What isn't absorbed is released from the anus as a little bubble.
They even manage to fart without benefit of baked beans or mexican food LOL

I'm sure there are others but corys are the only ones I've seen do it. Corys were very popular with a friends kids when they were teens. They would bring their friends in to see the farting fish

What about my boyfriend's joooooke? You don't realize: he's really not that funny usually. You'd better really enjoy this one, because the next funny one could be in a few months' time! Oooops, he just read over my shoulder. Am in trouble.

Well, going off of the fact that I've never seen a fish blow bubbles out their rear... anyways, as stated earlier, the gI track is different. Plus, there is no methane released into fish tanks that I know of. I don't think methane combines with water, so there should be some sign of it coming out of the fish. Or, if it does combine with water, the levels could reach a toxic state fairly fast. Perhaps if you count the molecular exchange that occurs in a fish's gills as farting... But otherwise, I would say no.

As a side note, I know fishes are constantly peeing though (seemed to fit in this discussion, hehe.). that's the only way they can keep their bodies from exploding as the water is trying to reach euqilibrium. So, if you ever want a cheap laugh, point at your fish and yell "You're peeing! And you're still peeing! And you're still peeing!" Makes my day sometimes...

Cool link! Hey, SemanticDrift, have you ever found decent articles on fish memory? I can't find anything vulgarised yet serious, and I do not want to sieve through tons of abstracts in scientific papers.

I have seen fish give off bubbles (fart).
But only when they are sick.
I also have seen fish "constipated" this too is a sign of an unhealthy fish.

if they fart, then you would see bubbles floating towards the surface, i've never seen that, so i'm assuming they don't. lol... ???

I have not read the entirity of the thread, but here is what I know.

Methane or CH4 is one of the simplest carbon compounds. Breaking down almost any organic compound will produce methane. Any animal with more than one chamber digestive system will produce methane, which in turn will have to be passed. So any animal with more than a one chamber digestive system will fart. Humans have a mechanism to "belch" also, which is just a fart out of the other end, most other animals do not have a belching mechanism. (that could in theory be why you notice dogs, cows, horses, etc farting quite a bit)

I know for a fact they fart: My Angelfish keep letting these little air bubbles out of their hindquarters all the time ... and that can't be anything other than farting, right?

If they start farting well, I might even consider removing the airpump from their tank. They'd probably do the job well enough themselves ...
