I started dosing tropica specialised nutrition macro + micro liquid ferts for my plants. Now my fish are doing absolutely fine. But my ammonia tests consistently show 1ppm. Do these ferts add some sort of non-toxic nitrogen molecule that throws off the test?
I know it is supposed to add nitrogen, just assumed it would be a nitrate. I have no algae blooms and am dosing carefully.

I tested by adding a drop of tropica in tap water and testing ammonia. The test tube went from yellow to dark green, so I'm certain it is fooling the test. I guess the question is why and is it doing anything to the test. Am also adding flourish excel for a carbon source.

I have 8 Neon Tetras, guppies and a nerite in a 10 gallon tank, Java ferns, Moss, Anubias and some ludwigia repens red.

So I did some research. Looks like this fert has ammonium nitrate. Does anyone know if that dissociates into ammonia in water or stays stabilized as ammonium nitrate. My Ph is 7.8.

My fish have shown no sign of stress from the 1ppm ammonia level shown by the apI test.

I think you may be on to something. I've used flourish in my planted tank and drove my ammonia readings off the chart. But my fish show no sense of distress. Also my Nitrites and nitrate tests show 0ppm readings.

Oh I did more experiments that I didn't update here. So I dropped a drop of NPK fert into an ammonia test and it instantly went dark green. So yes, the test does detect the ammonium in the test.

Some of the ferts do talk about complexed ammonium that does not dissociate unless plants break it down - I think flourish claims that.

At any rate, I moved away to using calcium nitrate powder as an N source eventually, I felt the ammonia in the fert was triggering gda. Not sure if that was the culprit, but bought the 1kg box and have to use it.
