Do egg layers become gravid in the absence of males?

I think I have a couple gravid female harlequin rasboras, but I don't know if I have a male or the breeding situ. is right. Can the female become gravid even if breeding conditions are not right or there is no male present? If she does, does she lay the eggs or retain them? I'm trying to discern whether they are gravid, bloated or fat. Their bellies look like tiny lumpy marbles are inside and very dark strip from chin to tail along her bottom side. She hangs around the bottom, sometimes isolating herself, which I know is not normal, but swims around actively too. I've seen them fan the bottom of leaves, but no one is laying eggs or getting thinner. I have 9. One died for unknown reasons with in a week of getting them.

 

Pictures and filling the disease template would be helpful.

 

Harlequin rasboras look gravid, but they are not laying eggs, nor am I trying to breed them. Do they get eggs in their belly without mating? If so, do they lay them?

 

Female agg layers will become gravid in the right vonditions without males but they cannot breed wothout males or lay eggs without males.

Females sometimes lay eggs without males but they wont be fertile.

Could they become eggbound because of that, or do you think becoming eggbound has nothing to do with the presence of males or being able to lay the developed eggs? This happened to me with old female zebra danios, but I have not investigated to substantiate the cause.
