Hey everyone HOPEFULLY the day has come for me to donate my big 3 Inch goldfish big boy to petsmart(that is if my dad says no again as ushaul).so basicly petsmart is the only store around me that sells fish besides walmart (walmart is horrible with fish)and the promblem is that they said they won't take it because I never bought it from them originally and also if I tried to give it to them my only option is that they said they would adopt it out or something like that and they said they have some employees that keep goldfish so could this be good? Everytime I go there is see little kids and teenagers banging on the glass all the time and I just would not want this fish to be stressed and die like let's say one day I walk in and I see it Coverd in ick that would make me sad but one way or another that fish has got to go he's destructive and chases my smaller fish like my neons and corys and he also which makes me very mad! , he also poos ALOT which kills my water and causes my tank to be cloudy which gets me so fustrated coming home to a cloudy tank each day with extra water changes....but yeah that's the point he has to go but I would not want him to die at petsmart and I would feel guilty of it especially since my sister keeps saying he's going to die because of you and she also said he's fine in your 20 gallon (not atchaully) but yeah have any of you had this feeling of guilt before of donating a fish?

Not me, I have I good relationship with the guy I buy my fish from. He actually insists I trade for something else if I have a fish that I have to rehome.

I generally "donate" to another aquarist, or trade with a well reputed aquatics store, so no I don't usually have any guilt over it. I did feel a bit bad over some fish I'd given a friend whose kiddo dumped the entire food container in the tank with a babysitter whom did nothing, mentioned that he'd overfed the fish when she got home.... That was a mass fatality event that considering said friend and I were at an event together I felt a bit guilty about the situation.

Big Boy is gorgeous. Somebody who has the space will want and take care of him. Try posting here. Try posting on the local Craigslist. If that doesn't work tell Dad not to plan on anything for next Saturday because the two of you are digging a pond .

Seriously, if you've got a shady spot a sturdy kiddie pool is all Big Boy really needs to live with you happily, and they're on sale because it's the end of season. Put in a couple of flower pots and maybe a potted water lily so he can hide from raccoons and you'll be set. Goldfish can live outside all year, even in cold climates as long as you don't feed them in winter. Another option is to look on CL for somebody giving away a 100 gallon plus aquarium- people move and don't want the hassle of selling or moving them- but you do have to act fast.

Another option is to buy a storage tub from Walmart, largest ones are usually 50 gallons ish, they are well priced. It would hold him in there for awhile

Yeah this will be a problem for me as well. I have a baby incandescent shark that I bought from lfs. He said when he outgrows my 48 I can bring him back. I love him already so I'm dreading the day(
