30 Gallon Tank DIY Tank stand for a 30 gallon breeder

Okay so I'm planning to build a stand for a 30 gallon breeder withing the next month. I am totally new at this DIY stuff so I'm starting with a small stand to test it out.

I'm still undecided on 2x4's or 4x4's so any advise there is appreciated. I am leaning towards 4x4's just for extra security on weight.

The dimensions of the stand will be 37" long (black beams) 36" high (clay beams) and about 20" deep (white beams). The yellow beams are for screws and extra support.

This is just the inside (shell) and I will focus on this part first to see how it comes along then I will worry about any staining/finishing I will do.

How does this look? It's made by google sketch.

That's a great sketch Imo 2x4's would be more than sufficient for your task if used in place of the 4x4 's on the sketch.

It has great support, the only thing I could recommend is attaching the brick colored end pieces to the white support to transfer the load. The way the front/back is supported I don't think you'd have an issue if you didn't, but it couldn't hurt imo.

Thanks Matt B for the input.

Is this more like what you were thinking?

No problem. That's exactly what I was saying but now the problem is the front/back supports don't transfer at the corners. Maybe a mitered cut would be best, that or some heavy duty L brackets to attach to the upright supports.

Don't worry about it That's exactly what I meant! Now the load from all 4 sides can be transferred to the corner posts equally instead of relying on a side support to support another side support if that made sense.

Yeah makes total sense now!!! Thanks Matt B I will be sure to give you credit once I actually start my build!!

Also one last question any downside to using 4x4's instead of 2x4's?
This is my first build so I think the extra support of the 4x4's will aid in my expertise or in my hand Unexpertise in this case.

No downside other than cost the strength of two by 2x4 is a lot.

Check out diyfishkeepers for a how to video.

Here is a thread on the stand I built for my 40breeder. Followed the diyfishkeepers site. Stand cost about $75.00. It really turned out pretty for my first time ever making something like furniture. If I can do it as green as I was I believe anyone can.

Good luck. And show us the pics. Btw the stand itself weighs about 75 pounds. I think I could put a car on it just fine.

A little late but I am in the processes of making a 40 gallon breeder and this video I found pretty good. I am just going to add a couple more pieces for more support.

Not late at all a few things have come up around my house and I can't get around to even starting this project till probably mid August at the earliest now more than likely mid/late September but I still can't wait to do it!!!

Yea I know how that goes it kind of sucks but atleast this way you could get some more ideas for the stand I was looking at these videos and thought about making my 40 look the same. I do not think it would bring the cost up to much more.

Thanks again will watch these vids tomorrow!!!

Although now more has come up and I will be moving September/October so I might actually upgrade the stand to go for my 55 instead lol. The petsmart one isn't suiting me too well right now.

If in can gather the money and get my friend to lend me his tools for two months I might build a stand for my 55 and soon to be 10 gallon along with the 30 gallon.

So all in all the move might get me setup for my MTS!!!! And I'd just need the tanks then hahaha
