So i was wondering if this will work as a sponge filter
I took some aqua clear filter foam then i took an adapter from an intake from my hob filter and carved 4 rows of holes 5 high. Place the tube a little more then half way though the foam then added the air tube soon to add an air stone
Would this still work is using the foam fine or would a sponge be better? Any tips would be very appreciated thank you

would it be better if i use a sponge over the foam?

Put a sponge over the foam or use a sponge instead of the foam?

The larger the cells in the sponge, the more water will flow through it. Your foam would be very good for a fry tank.

well this filter is intended for a 2.5 gallon shrimp tank the little hob filter that came with it keeps growing i guess you could say a green moss on top of the median

For a shrimp tank, that would be perfect.

I've used the same exact set-up on my brood tanks, only I added an elbow on the top bc the bubbling was so loud. then I bought a real sponge filter after a few months, they're like five bucks

I was going to buy one but didn't no what size toget for a 2.5 gallon. As of now I have it in my 55gallon tank to build up some BB. I just don't no how long to leave it in there to have enuf BB for 9 bv and some baby's

I'd give it a month to properly cycle your sponge. 2 weeks at the minimum.

nah I wouldn't leave it anywhere near that long.

What i would do is take some media from your 55's filter and place it on/in you sponge filter and leave it a week.
