Discus With Infected Gills - Please Watch This Video...

I have measured the Nitrites with a Nitrites-only test kit ever since, a few months after I got my first tank, I was told that test strips which I used are inaccurate. The funny thing is that the outcome is always identical: 0,05 mg/liter. Also fresh tap water measures 0,05 mg/liter.
Ah. It should be at exactly zero. You can purchase an API Master Test Kit at chewy for pretty cheap Let me know what she says about those questions. If the gills are already getting better without medication, then I'm sure it was just ammonia poisoning. That doesn't explain the worms, though.

I already have an equivalent arsenal for: pH (double) -NO2 (double) - NO3 - KH- GH - NH3. I paid twice the amount you pay for an API Master Test Kit:

Are there no live bearing detritus or other worms? I have Grindal and white worm cultures. In the boxes of the Grindals I see eggs. I guess that the whiteworms from which Mrs Grindal selected the small variety/relative lay eggs as well.

She said she feeds bovine heart, could it come from the meat?

Possibly, but I doubt there'd be an aquatic worm in a piece of meat. Where does she buy the heart from?
The worm seems too large to be detritus. Didn't you start with one worm and get two? Maybe it reproduced asexually.

Hmm. I thought I read somewhere that they were. I guess not. On one website it says that they're 2 mm long.

Do the fish show these symptoms, OP?
Source:

Behavior

Fish will appear lethargic, and swimming will become intermittent as the fish will tire very easily. Breathing at the surface, or just stationary "hanging" at the surface will be observed, as the fish try's to obtain sufficient oxygen when the gills are badly infested.

Fins.
Fins can become clamped and/or ragged . Often small spots of blood may be observed at the base of the fins.

Body
Lesions may become apparent on the body as well as excessive mucous. Colors of the fish become "faded" in appearance.

Gills
Gills will usually become protuberant and usually are paler than normal. Excess slime can easily be observed.

Skin
Areas of hemorrhaging can be observed as well as ulcers, which typically have a circular shape. A slime can be observed over the body in advanced cases.
Hi!

I just got word. None of the symptoms of flukes are present.

My friend worries that the fish have red gills. She thinks they ought to be pale.
What do I answer?

Edit: the worms in their container are still alive.

Most likely ammonia poisoning, then. Continue with the water changes. You may want to increase them to 80% daily if you don’t see any improvement.

She said the fish were getting better.
No doubt she will continue with the water changes.

A while ago I go a new message as a response to yours. Now the gills of the fish are swelling again. In one day it goes up and down.

This may just be changes in the ammonia levels. Is she able to get a picture?

Of the gills? I'll ask.

I just asked her to send one.

This is a trial if I can copy and paste a picture of mine:

Hmmm it should work also for a picture she makes.

Can’t see that. I’ll check again later on my computer, though.

OK. It's the 3 multies I got two days ago. They are about the same size of the cold water fish I started with: Everglades pygmy sunfish which may be swimming in the water behind your house ....

I’m sure they’re beautiful. Which I could see it. I’ll be using my computer around 5 or 6. It’s 3:30 right now.

Did you see the pictures? After your last post my internet connection went down so at 6 Florida time - midnight here - I turned my computer off.
(I keep asking myself why you consider yourself unfortunate to live in Florida. The whole world talks about your wildlife and warm climate.)

The multies are beautiful and immensely interesting. I am not uploading any pictures of them (at least for now), because we are trying to find out if the copy-and-paste procedure works for s sent from Germany.

No, I didn’t. I expected there to be a link, but I couldn’t click on anything. I hate the climate in Florida. I was born in New York and prefer the cold there.

Here in Europe I can copy and paste a picture and generally everyone can see it, also outside Italy.
Now also on my screen the picture I copied and pasted has disappeared from the post I wrote yesterday, leaving an icon behind and between square brackets the text "IMG", I rightclicked on it and was referred to the webmaster.
So the outcome of the experiment is: negative.
I managed to download the video in my computer, but in spite of all my efforts I am unable to upload the file.

Every year in winter I'd like to be somewhere up north in a cold, preferably rural place with lots of (lasting) snow.

It's fine if I can't see the pictures. I'm just gonna assume it's poisoning. Mind giving me a decent description of the gills instead?
Yeah. Winter can be a bit too much for me there, but I love the fall and spring.

I'll ask for the description, the fish are some 1,000 miles away from here. It looks very much like the purchase of the new 60 gallon tank and the for now yet unresolved problems with discus fish health keep an emergency situation going.
Moreover she said (wrote) yesterday that Germany suffered a defeat in the soccer championships. In some places such an event is quite a tragedy.
I'll keep you updated as soon as I get news. Thanks for your ongoing assistance.

Here we have no fall and no spring, but it does not bother me. But we have no real winter either, and I would appreciate to have one.

No problem. Just let me know. That sucks for Germany. People can be really crazy about sports.

Winter can be all right in New York, but I hardly remember sleigh-riding or anything. Just that the snow was cold, which anyone can obviously assume

Message received a while ago:

Gills again swollen.

The fish came with the second hand tank and were not properly kept.

I got finally pictures to upload:
