Discus in newly setup tank

Hi, I need to know if I can put 6 discus (2 inch/5cm size) in a newly setup 75 gallon tank.
I have the filter media from my previously setup planted tank, but due to power outage the filter was not running for 2-3 hours. Do I need to cycle again or is it safe to put the fish in?

I've never had discus, but I'd like to some day, so I've been paying attention to information about them. With that being said, I think you'll be okay with the 6 in a 75, at least initially. Hopefully someone more knowledgeable will confirm that or correct me.

Where were you in the cycling process when the power went out? I assume you're doing a fishless cycle?

I was not cycling, I took the media from another setup that was running for nearly 1 year.

Yeah, my LFS has some & they are beautiful. I went there to buy some dwarf gourami & neon tetras but after seeing the discus I couldn't resist.

Don't tell them that at SD !
Most here even got there's from a breeder ,a couple actually got nice disc from PetSmart !
I got mine from my LFS but he ordered them from Hans so I have a knowledge of where they come from and can say I have Hans !
I like the overhead sump filter..I have looked at several premade versions and thought hard on my owns DIY .I build regular sumps so??
Got pics of yours ?

So you bought the fish already . You should be fine with the tank as is. Being there 2” fish be prepared for daily or every other day 50% water changes. Good luck and ask as many question as you like .

Yep, just keep up with water changes for a bit, with the amount of water that gets changed out, the toxic effects are flushed out. It should catch up quickly.

You are right I didn't get them, but I asked the LFS to hold them for me. Didn't want to make a hasty decision only to end up losing all the fish. So, I thought it would be best to ask & then decide.

Very NICE Bob !
They look like they have plenty of room to grow !
Love the little EBR also !
Is that Dragon stone or another that might raise hardness over time ?

Thanks. Yes they are dragon stone. Do they raise hardness?

Unlike Seiryu stone, Dragon stone is inert so it doesn't mess with pH or hardness. I think it will be okay then.

Nice looking tank and discus!! They are small . I didn’t see them in the first pic till I expanded it . Good luck! Be careful with the stone. If it is sharp they may scratch themselves if they dash around.

I had 8 much bigger ones in a 55 gallon. Did it more than once. I always try to over filter. I had a Rena xp3 or xp4 on the tank. They don't require the water changes everyone thinks they do and they aren't as sensitive. The first 55 I had them in the heater failed on and they survived water temp over 90. That being said, I ran a lot of air all the time. I ran carbon, chemipure, and some bio media in the filter and never had issues. Discus have been tank bred long enough now that they are more hardy than people think.

To answer your last question I would make 100% sure the tank is fully cycled.
