Discus Gang Updates

DecoyCat I'll take another video soon, just to save you extra words in the future the one with darker bars is a Turq and the one with very light bars in just a plain brown. So for now I'll say that the turquoise and brown ones are females, and the orange one (unknown strain) and I believe blue pigeon blood are males. I'll make sure the next one doesn't have glare from the window too...
Based on how long I've had them though, I would say they won't be forming any breeding pairs in the future. Especially since the ones bandit and jmaldo have only took 3 months to pair.

nikm128 Do you know how old they are? They look older by their sizes... Do you have means to set up a spawning tank?
I thing I noticed about my Angels, I know they are different but same species, they spawned when I changed them into a different tank on 3 occasions(3rd time came the babies), and it is know changing tanks will kick off their spawning in most fish, the slightly different water conditions do it. If yours have been in the same tank, same conditions for a long time maybe all they need is a push in the right direction... You could always try anyway, just an idea

Edit: that big orange one is a PB of some type...

BarbaraLocke your discus look good in that video, how wonderful
What a great idea with the uv film on the tank, I would never had thought of that, up there for thinking!!
They were really munching out on that beefheart lol

Thanks, Sabrina! The window the 75 gallon sits in front of is a large ‘picture’ window - which is my ‘view of the world’ of my land out back - which faces west. So I can not only watch the beautiful sunsets, but approaching storms, and the wild critters that show up. Since the film has some insulating properties, wrapping 3 sides of the tank should also help retain heat in the winter. Win Win

All of them except the pigeon blood should be around a year and a half old, the pb is a little bit less than a year old. I could probably figure out a smaller spawning tank.

Hey Gang. The eggs have left the building.
Woke up yesterday waited for the lights to come on and the eggs were still there. Yeah! But... it appears they fungused over.

Fungus Eggs.jpg

Just an observation, I did notice the parents were not fanning the eggs as I normally see with the many spawns from the Bolivians and EBA. New / Inexperienced parents?

And before I could remove them the pair decided to start eating them. I did get a vid of them eating them.
(may post if anyone interested)

Within an hour the eggs are gone.

Eggs Gone.jpg

Mother Nature at her finest. I have decided to leave the divider in for the time being since the other 4 are doing better without all the stress from the pair. Let's see how long before another spawn?

coralbandit
Appears to be about the same time frame.

Learning all the Time.

I think you should keep the divider in for sure..
I have read reports on Filial cannibalism that seem to have proven that the parents 'build' better ,larger stronger spawns after they have re absorbed the nutrients from several spawns ..It does seem the eggs are getter better each spawn for my guys ..
My guys still have their eggs fourth spawn [24 hours tonight ]..

Been thinking my pothos is going crazy in my fish room until I saw this picture ..
Somehow I thought of all you guys and girls !

I mean that is NICE !
I am willing to concede that possibly that amount of plants could really help with nutrients !

How in the world would you clean that tank?
I actually had one in my 50g, but the cats started playing with it, and I didn’t want them to get tangled in it and pull the hood off the tank - to say nothing of scaring the Discus!

HI guys, just finished a nice water change in the 4 foot, all fish are happy with some fresh water. Ranga is moving around a fair bit in the 3 foot by herself which is a change for her, not sure she is eating yet though. Thought id post some pics in here I took a couple of days ago, that Turq is getting bigger by the day, really starting to fatten up in the head too. Big blue is getting more friendly and Little blue is a bit sad as Ranga was his best friend. Teeny and tiny are pigs, they are still searching for food scraps long after feeding time lol
Pictured below is the Turq (which for some reason I just can't give a name lol) Then Big blue and also Tiny who looks like his bloated but its just all the food he has devoured...

They’re all beautiful, DecoyCat !! It didn’t take long for Tiny to settle in and approve the menu!

I used to keep them, but I sold them off as they weren't the quality I wanted and didn't grow very well. Now that I have room for big tanks again, they are the first on my list! Question, how often do you do water changes on your Discus tank?

Yes it seems addicting!! . And since the dude bought more I’ve gotten the itch. And an empty 45g tank.

This seems to be my problem. Coming back to discus I wanted certain fish. And I though I had bought them. Now all my discus are growing good and getting big but none of the ones I got from Hans look anything like what I ordered. Little disappointed.

Been looking at another breeder. Macs discus. This guy started my first time around and was just to expensive than to buy his discus. But now he’s pretty close to Hans. Free shipping if you buy 5. So I picked this grouping below. And emailed him to send me pics of them now. Still waiting but that’s ok cause I changed my mind to the second pic.

I only have 2 Discus in my 55g, so I do 50-75% WC’s every other day, but my 75 gallon has 7 young Discus that are eating a lot, so I siphon the bottom every day, and do at least a 50% WC every other day.

Lol!! I shouldn’t laugh, though, since I just ordered 3 more from iFish so that I will have 2 of each color

The ones you’re choosing from Macs look fantastic 86 ssinit ! I stayed with iFish to keep the acclimation/QT fast since the others in my 75 gallon (except Arlo) came from the same place - and it was the last day of his sale!

Sounds like everyone is getting more discus!! Yikes lol
Took this video a couple of hours ago, they were all giving me those feed me fishy eyes lol
So active now I have removed Ranga, and by the way, she is doing much better in the 3 foot, eating a bit and swimming around a lot more, but I will keep her under house arrest for at least another week...
No light on, my discus hate the LED light, so bit of reflection sorry..

A few of my fish buddies told me I should have gotten my discus from Kennys discus when they found out I got discs .. They sure look nice in the info I get ..He [Kenny] is on SD..

So the snakeskins have spawned again today .They eggs do not seem to increasing in volume but seem like bigger/better eggs ??
Without a wiggler yet I will go on a limb and say pair ..If they were not the other would have laid eggs by now like my crazy angels !
Second day of Metro in the 60 gallontoday ..

As mentioned in my thread went to the Auction. Picked up some plants and sold some EBA. I was very tempted to pick up some fish but... since I will be getting some tank mates from some members here (coralbandit DarkOne )
I decided against it. But it was tough. There were only 2 "Discus" (Red Melons, I think) up for sale their body size was that of a half dollar, surprisingly went for $88.
Anyway, I see some of the gang are buying more. I got this vid from my supplier last night for anyone interested, some nice looking fish and types. Enjoy!

HI Discus Gang
Ranga is now doing well, she is back in with the others, I didn't treat her while she was in the other tank, I think using medications is a last resort. Her colour is back and she is swimming all over the tank like the others, she is camera shy though. My hospital tank now stands empty as the Angelfish fry are now in the 3 foot to grow out.. All in all things are going good and there is nothing really to report
Ranga is pictured below this morning..

Lol! It’s always hard for me to tell from pix unless there’s a familiar object to measure against! That’s why I taped a 6” paper ruler to my Discus tanks. Of course they don’t come to rest close to the glass above or below the ruler very often, and distance can skew the the whole thing, but it gives me an idea of how much they are growing.

And speaking of size! Here’s the first pix of the 3 little new additions that arrived yesterday. Following DecoyCat ’s lead, I’m calling them Itsy, Bitsy and Teeny-Weeny These guys are 1” at most! A little hard to see, but they’re still pretty skittish, although they hang with the ‘big guys’, and they were hungry this morning.

Nice but we’re they sold as 2” fish? Because they look about a third of the size of your older discus. Who look great .

Thanks 86 ssinit ! They’re sold as ‘up to’ 2”. The 2 Golden’s were only a little bigger than these 3 when I got them, but they’ve grown fast! The PB’s were the only true 2 inches out of the 6, and they are still the largest. Yesterday the little ones were all stress bars, and I couldn’t tell which was what, but the Snake Skin I got in the first batch has already started hanging with the new little SS, and there are less stress bars today

HI Gang,
Sorry for my absence, my Nan (grandmother) passed away last week, she was 88, she had a good life. I have a busy week this week so will be away until the weekend.
I miss you guys and the updates, hope all is well.
As for my fish, they are all alive and well considering the lack of water changes at the moment as I don't feel up to it, I hope they can hold out until the weekend.. The baby Angelfish are good too, they look like minI Angels now but are not as big as I thought they would be at this stage.

  • #120
Sorry about Nan DecoyCat but you have a good out look IMO. Your fish should be fine .
I hate to say again I do less then the rest of you but I am close to FAR less ! Just my schedule and sloth like behavior ..
But that being said you can't stop a good fish so the blue snakeskins have laid eggs again .Actually 2 days ago I think and they are still there and look very amber ..

jmaldo 'learning all the time' opportunity does not always knock twice .. I know I say they are young and little to no sense in taking the eggs but go figure after saying they lay eggs in exactly the same place every time on this large pot they lay the eggs in a different spot this time ..I lean towards discus being a little smarter then rams but I may not be the right person to make that call ? I wonder where I fall sometimes ..
So where are the eggs ??
On the HOB filter intake tube ! Almost as creative as angels laying on heaters ? They all like upright things , I get it !
Who has more then a few hobs ? Probably the same guy who has extra intake tubes ...
Eggs are mine if they are still there in A.M.[ my impersonation of the restrained bandit ?] and I will try to artificially hatch ..They should be very close if still there tomorrow..
I am not even sure they are a pair yet so I need to see one wiggler.. They act like a pair for sure ??
"She" has some awesome black edging going on her fins !
They have been sharing fanning the eggs like they need it 3 inches from the return of an AC 110!
