I was about to say the 5 for $5 ended last month but I just checked and it's on for this month to the end of Aug. The selection of fish included in the sale vary from region to region though.
Hmm I think a trip to PetCo would be worth it if I can get another 10 embers for $10

They were on a very fine layer of pea gravel, at this point I must say he had a fish shop but they were the only fish in the tank & had been for quite a while hence him using the colour food as they just weren’t selling because they were so dull.

Edit: love your bowl btw, it looks lovely
I think maybe DarkOne aren't getting black dots because he has them in a light substrate? Who knows. Seems like the color granules get their colors popping so that’s going to be a daily staple for them.

Thank you!

Just cleaned the glass (front and sides only) and did a water change but the water is still a bit cloudy. That piece of xmas moss was about 2" and I was too lazy to fish it out. One branch attached to the heater and is growing up along it.

I'm jealous as to how vibrant your embers are! They look phenomenal

I originally got them and the pygmies for my shrimp tank. Now that most of my shrimp are gone, I need to do some serious trimming and cleaning and put these little guys in there. They might get darker (and get spots?) on the black substrate. That would free up a 10 gallon for breeding OLCs .

Go for it! Get those OLC breeding ASAP!

Slight update. I stopped feeding the fish those flakes and started feeding nothing but TCTG 2-3 times a day and I have to say, I’m already seeing color improvement in the embers and possibly even in Sunshine the betta. All the male embers are super bright orange (compared to before) and the females aren’t too far behind them honestly. Excited to see how much more they’ll color up in the next couple of weeks/months.
Here’s a picture where you can see some of the embers really contrasting with the driftwood.

Alright so the bowl is doing great as mentioned before but I've been playing around with the idea of swapping out the bacopa in the bowl for another type of stem plant. The bacopa is starting to get leggy and I'm growing a little tired of it and want a new look for the background.
I still want a tall background plant, low/med lighting with good substrate (fluval stratum) and no co2. I want it to be more bushy than the bacopa so it can really fill in the background but not like wisteria or water sprite, so those 2 are out of the picture.
I was thinking of trying the polysperma I have in the 75 gallon but I don't have much of it so I'll have to take a few clippings, try it in the bowl and slowly transition if I go that route. If not, I was also thinking of trying cabomba or maybe even pogostemon stellatus octopus. I heard that gets pretty big so I'm not sure how great it'd be for the bowl.
If possible, something that gets reddish/pink at the tips would be my preference just to add some color but I'm open to any and all other suggestions.

Pearlweed? If you plant it, it will grow up and look pretty good but you'll have to trim weekly once it's established. I'm having that issue in my Spec III now and thinking of pulling it out.

Rotala rotundifolia? It can grow pinkish but you need CO2 for that. Otherwise, it grows pretty thick and you'll need to trim once or twice a month.

I just set up my 5.5g as a dirted tank. I put some dwarf sag, s repens and crypt wendtiI red to see how it does. My Spec III is dirted and they all do really well in there but it's way overcrowded so I thought I'd try in the 5.5g. I put an inch of organic dirt and sprinkled some Osmocote Plus and capped with about 2" of PFS. I'll need to wait a few weeks/months before I can put fish in there as there will most likely be an ammonia and/or nitrate spike. And I dosed some macros just for fun.

I was looking at rotala rotundifolia. I really like the shape the leaves and the color it gets under higher light. Now my mission is to find some that grown pest free. The bowl hasn't seen a snail since it's been set up and I would like to keep it that way.

I have some but the leaves can change shape depending on water and ferts. I have some if you want a few stems to try out.

The ones in my Spec III should be pest free. I have some in my shrimp tank that might have limpets.

Thanks! I’m definitely interested in trying it out and seeing how it does in the bowl. I think my bowl would be considered medium lighting and with the fluval stratum, pretty decent substrate

Update with pictures!

The bowl got a slight rescape, well I got rid of about half of the bacopa and replaced it with rotala rotundafolia I got from DarkOne. I cut all the stems he gave me in half and planted them all. I can’t wait till it grows nice and tall so it can completely fill in the background. I like it so much more that the bacopa.
Here’s a before picture during the water change.

FTS with the rotala. Looks pretty sparse on the right side but it’ll grow nice and tall in no time and then I can start propagating it more.

Completely forgot to add! Last week I was in NJ and ended up buying another 10 ember tetras for the bowl! They’re in QT right now with 6x 24k gold White Cloud Mountain minnows. They’ll be in there for 6-8 weeks for 2 reasons. One, make sure they’re 100% healthy. Two, they’re TINY little guys. Like less half and inch! They’re basically still fry. Hopefully they grow a lot in the 10 gallon QT before I put them in the bowl. No pictures of them right now, can’t get any good ones because of how small they are.

Most of my Embers aren't much bigger than 1/2" and they've been in QT for 8 months

The ones in my bowl are about 3/4 of an inch but the new ones I just got are closer to 1/4 of an inch. They're definitely the smallest fish I've ever bought

The bowl is finally completely stocked!!!!
I moved the 10 ember tetras that were in QT into the bowl (finally). They were in QT for a month and a half. I put them in last night after the lights went out which I think was good so they can settle in while it’s dark. There’s so much more activity in the bowl now I love it!

I also bought a tissue culture of dwarf hair grass so that went in today during the water change. Hoping that will grow in nice and thick like I originally wanted it to.

I took this picture today and you can clearly see which are the new ones. They’re duller in color and smaller but they’ll color up in a few weeks.

Got embers?

Don’t mind the algae, haven’t done tank maintenance in 2 weeks but let’s not talk about that :x I was extremely excited to be able to get a shot of all 18 embers at once. I haven’t lost a single one of the 10 new ones. The new guys are starting to color up nicely and blending in with the original 8.

Update for the bowl. The tank is doing perfect *knocks on wood* I did unfortunately lose one of the smaller embers but other than that, it’s doing great. All the embers are nice and colored up. The only thing I feed is the tetra color granules, that stuff is magic lol. I can’t even tell which are the newer ones and which are the original 8. Sunshine the betta is doing great and loving his bowl, he’s definitely boss in there lol.
The rotala rotundafolia I put in the bowl is growing great, I’ve already propagated it a couple times so it’s filling in nicely. I also decided to add some clippings of other plants I had in the 75 gallon (no idea what plants they are) to see how they grow, so far a good.
As for upgrades for the bowl, the only thing I plan to do is add a minI canister filter rated for 15 gallon for better filtration and water movement. I’ll be buying the minI canister filter after I build a new stand for it that will double as storage.
That’s pretty much it for the bowl. Here’s a picture I just took.

It’s a zoo med canister filter. It’s made for turtle tanks but I figured it would work perfect for my bowl.

I’ve looked for a while trying to find a good small canister filter. I found that one I linked before and another one but they were almost never in stock so I decided to just stick with this one. Seems simple enough for what I’m looking for

Were you looking in a local shop? I did see one on ebay, but seemed a bit pricey for being sent from China. Usually I can find pretty cheap fish stuff on ebay and save money. Haha

No I looked on amazon. I only have one local shop near me and they don’t carry much. I do most of my shopping on amazon, I’ve had no so good experiences with eBay lol

Haha that's why with ebay I only buy cheap stuf that's 2-3 dollars. That way if they don't send it, it's not a big loss.

After my experience, I’m steering clear of eBay lol. Amazon has yet to let me down and I get exactly what I need

I have a ZooMed 30 and just took it off my 20 gallon guppy tank. Might be too powerful but if you want it, it's yours.

You might want to look at the Sunsun 602b. A bit cheaper and gets generally good reviews.

I’ll take it! I might be able to find a way to baffle the output somehow.

I've looked at the sunsun while I was looking up filters and they were an option but I like
The zoomed one a little more since it’s clear

There's valves to regulate the flow. The output connects loosely to the spraybar which is one of the reason I took it off. I got it used a while back and used it for about 6 months on the guppy tank. I overhauled it before I used it with new o-rings and lubed with silicone grease so it works much better than when I got it. I cleaned it off and put it away last month. I ordered some new parts before I set it up and other than the output, it's worked well.

Can anyone tell me what type of algae this is growing in my dwarf hairgrass? Or if its even an algae at all. It’s a light brown almost cotton like substance. It almost looks like mulm maybe? Its really hard to get out of the dhg and really unsightly.
