Different species of Mystery snails

Are different species only available in certain colours? I have 2 ivory Mysteries and I really like them. I was kind of wanting to get something a little different this time but after calling around the only store that could help at this time of year only has blue ones. Are they likely the same species as the ivory-coloured ones? Or is it possible it's some other species that's going to eat my plants and wreak havoc? I'd really like one of those stripey purplish ones!

I was going to play safe and get another ivory from the same place I bought my other 2 but the entire tank of snails was dead when I went to get one. 2 days later I had to point out to an employee that they were dead and now rotting because somehow nobody noticed

@ Bijou is rising babies and selling them in all different colors, and you know they are healthy. She has some nice stripey ones and different colors. Alison

Sadly, I'm only shipping in the states though All the mystery snails in the u.s. are most likely the same species, I'm not sure of Canada's import laws but I'd guess they're probably the same. I hope you find some!

I know, I'd love to have one of Bijou's babies! I didn't ask though because of that whole cross-border thing. Probably be a nightmare at best. The person at the store said they have a better selection in the spring because people like to buy them to put in their ponds?! Presumably they don't survive the winter, or the raccoons. Our winters are not harsh here so I would be hesitant about releasing them outside, we've got enough invasive species. I did ask about ordering some but she said they're harder to.get except.in the spring, too??? Maybe I'll go.look at the snails today and ask someone else. The blue ones.are quite pricey at $10 each but if they're nice I may forgo waiting for a purple stripey one

No worries, Alison! So much can be shipped so easily these days that it's sometimes difficult to remember that we have borders

I wish I could ship to other countries, I just have a feeling it would be such a pain since who knows what kinds of permits etc I'd need then they'd have to go through customs and god knows what else, eek! That's weird that they're more available in warmer months, I've heard that here as well. ...Mine are still laying clutches so I don't know.....
That's sad that people put them in ponds, what a waste! Half the fun of mystery snails is getting to watch their shenanigans, lol.

I would love to purchase some mystery snails!! The LFS around me has killed of almost all my fish but not the snails, they openly admitted they are having a problem in half their tanks! said that they got in 50 guppys and the next morning they were all dead! I purchased a snail from there and all is good with him and some fish from another set of tanks seems okay, but only a matter of time before it all goes bad. So how would I go about purchasing?

Bijou regularly offers babies for sale as they come available so you just have to watch for that thread when it comes up.

I would wait until you solve whatever's going on with your tank though before adding any more creatures.

OK, just went and found your thread about that and it sounds as though your tank hasn't been cycled. I recommend reading up on the nitrogen cycle, just click on the words, they'll take you to an article about that

My tanks seem fine now been two weeks all reading have been good. sorry that posts makes it sound as if mine are bad its the LFS that is all bad. They admited having fin rot bacterial problems which in turn got to my finish when I purchased from there. My guppys came from a breeder and I used a bunch of her water in my tanks and had them all alive and fine for about 4 weeks then introduced some new fish from the LFS and it was all bad. The two finish that are seperated in a private tank never ever had problems so I think it came from the new fish.

My Ph is 7
Nitrate 15
nitrite 0

I have been treating with Melafix my main tank don't know if that will affect readings but everyone seems good. I'm just now super scared to purchase from the LFS.

I recommend getting a liquid test kit instead of test strips, much more accurate. Plus the master kit from API contains an ammonia test. Much cheaper than strips in the long run too!

Do you have a quarantine tank for any new fish? I'm surprised your LFS sold them to you if they knew there was a problem. Good stores will put their own stock under quarantine if there's a problem.

Ya I was just going to use the small amount of strips I have left. Ya the store gave me a credit for all the fish I purchased from them, needless to say I'm afraid to buy any more from them. My quarantine tank is currently housing two guppies that I separated and are doing great but thankfully after a week of treating my main tank everyone in it seems to be on the mended and swimming fine.

All you can do is observe the fish at your LFS and try to pick ones from healthy tanks with no sick-looking fish. If their colours are bright and they are active then they're likely healthy...but put them in quarantine when you get home anyway

I also recommend waiting a few weeks until your tank is more stable and you're no longer using meds, most medications aren't that great for snails unfortunately. I'll have some baies available for months, so check back in!

I'm definitely holding out before adding anything we are going on a week plus and everything is doing fine so far fingers crossed. But looking ahead and kinda of scared to buy from the LFS seems they thing the 60 dyeing guppies were no big deal grrrr.

Bijou88: I got purples!

The store that told me they only had blue Mysteries and that they were really hard to.get at this time of year. After calling around all the shops I knew of I decided to have a look for myself since it seemed that blue was the closest I could get. They did indeed have a tank of blue ones (more pale grey if you ask me) but then I looked up and saw that the surrounding tanks were full of different colours of Apple
snails! I still don't know what the difference is but why they didn't think to mention these Apples when I'd asked for Mysteries is beyond me. I came home with 2 of the little cuties, they're about the size of a dime

I have to go shopping today. After I released them I realized I didn't have any suitable veggies to offer them so for the rest of today at least they're going to have to fend for themselves! I'm sure they'll be fine, I'm not sure that the store feeds them at all.
