Was looking at starting a betta tank and the pet shop said there is no difference between bettas and fighters

Siamese Fighting Fish is an old common name while the scientific name is Bettasplendens

Some people will say that 5 gallons is the minimum but I find they appreciate as much swimming space as they can get. The volume and height aren't as important as the footprint so a long, low tank is ideal if you can find one. I have a 6.6 gallon bookshelf tank that's about 2 feet long and it's perfect!
