Did these people actually sell me an empty shell?

Just bought a mystery snail from Petco. There seems to be some hard covering on the opening. Is this an empty shell? ImageUploadedByFish Lore Aquarium Fish Forum1465855683.093226.jpg ImageUploadedByFish Lore Aquarium Fish Forum1465855766.120026.jpg

Nope, that's the snail's operculum. He's inside, just hiding.

Oh thank god. I'm such a worry wort. I was like, "really, how does that even happen". If he has that, it means he's alive, right? I haven't seen him move yet

If he's dead, he'll smell bad and hang out of his shell.

The smell is pretty horrific too, like strong rotten eggs smell, at least when I got a dead nerite snail it was.

edit: I should add that not all dead snails come out of their shell either, my nerite never did. Of course I suppose it could be different with mystery snails.

Agreed with the others....neither did mine (nerite).

Mysteries can't stay closed when they're dead so they like flop out. Sometimes they just flop open and sometimes the whole body comes out depending how long it's been dead and other factors
