Did my LFS accidentally give me a fancy guppy?

I just purchased four ghost shrimp (at least that's what they were labeled as, even though they have black spots all over) from my LFS.

After arriving home and looking at the bag while it's acclimating, I noticed a little hitchhiker that wasn't supposed to be in the bag. I have a feeling there were fancy guppies in the same tank, but I'm not certain.

I have a few questions:

1. Will this baby eat the same fish flakes neon tetras do? (TetraMin tropical flakes) I don't have any brine shrimp.
2. Are there any special accommodations I need to make?
3. Will it be happy alone or should I get more?

I think that fancy guppies can be housed with neon tetras. Here's my specs:

20 gallon tank, has been cycled for almost 2 months. Six neon tetras, one assassin snail and now four ghost shrimp.Has Amazon and Oriental sword, Java fern, windelov, anubius and red ludwigia. Filter is Tetra Whisper IQ20 75% power. 25% water change every week.

Am: 0
NO²: 0
NO³: 10
Temp: 76°F
pH: 7.8

These are the best pictures I can get. Let me know if you need any more pictures or information.

Thank you in advance for any help! :)

As a non-guppy owner who has just picked up random knowledge from people on this forum, I believe that guppies are not picky eaters at all. They will eat many things. They are fin-nippers, but that shouldn't affect short-finned fish. Guppies are schooling fish, so if you plan on keeping the fish, I would have a contingency plan for building up the school. However, they create a lot of waste, so I would be careful putting two schools into a 20 gallon, especially since schools of fish show their best and most interesting behavior as you add more fish to the school (therefore making the tank more interesting).

You could try returning the guppy or grow it out until it's bigger and can sell/rehome it locally. Since you already have neons, I would focus on building that school.

I have never raised guppy fry but i bred mollies which are very similar ( mollies are technically a type of guppy) I just fed them crushed flake food and they grew up. They arent picky, if it fits in their mouth, they will eat it.

Good time to set up a temporary nano tank. It can make a nice place to grow fry out.

And my LFS has a problem with their ghost shrimp. I noticed one by itself in a tank the other day. They said because the tanks all run on one system that sometimes the shrimp make it into other tanks. It wouldn't surprise me a guppy fry could wind up where he isn't noticed.

I find fish fry in the snail tanks at my LFS. I'll be like, "what kind of fish is that in there?" And the workers just shrug. It's a mystery, I guess.

I'm gonna say guppy too
in 2-3 weeks, you'll get more fin definition and it'll be a lot easier to confirm

but yes, my guppy babies (40+) all start out like that. :p

I would definitely get 2 more guppies. Their personality changes 100% with friends.

if you separate male from female, they get depressed imo. I'm just introducing other fish to their environment so when they bred, the other fish help with population control. Guppies do eat fry, but I was having way to many survive!

my 3 skirt Tetras have been doing a great job so far. I have all my pregnant Mommas ( 5 , I think) in the 16 cube Biorb. No fry as yet. I'm guessing it was all consumed by skirts.

about 30+ guppies are juvenile and in tank with my Blue lobster. No signs of predation. But he will eat anything to slow to get away. It's very enriching for the lobster - keeps him occupied. They're safe. they move really fast and both fish and 'lobster' are well fed.

Mollies mixed with guppies is amazing! they go so well together. It's joyous. no other word for it. They love being near each other swimming. I'll see if I can get a video tomorrow.

TLDR: Get a few more guppies, everyone needs frens :)

From what I gather, guppies are basically just fancier goldfish...

I used to have goldfish, but when I was told they don't have stomachs but instead just a straight one-way digestive tract (which is why they constantly eat) all the sludge they made started to make sense. I decided that I wasn't going to have any more goldfish after that.

My only concern is that if I get guppies I'll have the same waste issue I had with goldfish.

. . . and pregnant. Did you put a male in the tank with her?

No, she's with six neon tetras though.

Females can look pregnant without being bred, they are still producing ovum after all! Sometimes they will expel the unfertilized eggs and look much thinner afterwards.

That makes sense, she looks like this most of the time.

I too, have a solo guppy- this guy has been in a planted shrimp tank for awhile now. Maybe he should go to Cleveland... :)
