Did I complete the cycle or start it over?

mikki080

After 6 weeks (fish-in), my ammonia- 0, nitrites- .25 and nitrates- 20.

I decided I wanted to change from river rock gravel to blasting sand substrate. Took out and replaced 75% of the substrate.

While changing the substrate, I did a 50% water change.

Then noticed how funky the filters were. I changed out 2 of the 4 cartridges that are in the hob filters.

Would this have ruined my almost completed cycle? Or have I completed cycling?

Switching out the substrate and half of your filter cartridges will have removed some of your beneficial bacteria, but not necessarily enough to crash your cycle. However, it wasnt quite finished anyway based on your nitrite reading.

id keep a close eye on your readings for the next few days and avoid replacing filter cartridges entirely - once they are dirty they can be cleaned in old tank water, but during cycling its best to leave them alone.
