there a way to get rid of diatoms? I have a 10g fresh water tank; no fish yet just plants

Almost all new tanks experience a bloom of diatom algae. They have shells comprised largely of silicates. In most instances, by the time the tank is several weeks old and fully cycled the diatom bloom will go away by itself. However, if your tap water is high in silicates, the problem can continue. If that does happen, you can use phosphate removal resins or beads. They remove silicates along with the phosphates. Just wait and see what happens.
