Determining calcium and alkalinity consumption

Semiaquatic

I have noticed that my calcium and alk levels have been dropping more than before since my corals are finally starting to get bigger. I was wondering if anyone has any advice on how to determine the daily calcium and alkalinity consumption for my tank. I use the API calcium and alk test kit so I don't know if that is even accurate enough to determine this but I figured I would ask. I'll get the Salifert kits if I need to

Thanks

Hi, aside from daily testing, there's no real way to know the daily uptake.

You should also be testing Mg, as Mg, Ca and Alk are all related and affect each other.

I'm a fan of the Red Sea kits for all 3

Also - what salt mix do you use? You might find that some of the reef salts actually keep parameters stable enough, and your weekly water changes will just 'top-up' without the need for independant dosing.

I test for magnesium as well. I keep my mag high because I'm trying to fight some algae. I use Red Sea coral pro salt

I need to test today and probably get some better test kits
