Ok, guys, are you ready for this? I have a 14 year old Lab, named Licorice. She's been losing her hearing off and on for the past year, but it finally seems to have gone. Now I have the poblem of communicating with her when her back it turned, or when she is far away from me.
When she facing me, she responds to hand signal (better then she responded to verbal commands when she could hear, I might add lol). But when she not with in reach, she can't hear any verbal commands I give her. When she is about 5 or 6 feet away from me, when I stomp, she stops what she's doing a looks around, but that won't work for when she's farther then that. A training collar (not that I like them, or anything), might be ok for dicpline if she would even respond to it (she's barked the batteries out of many of bark collars, and even learned the correction pattern on the newer "humane" ones, so that she only got the weakest shock, just a bit of static). I was thinking, maybe I could come up with some sort of collar that vibrates, as a sort of recall (teach her that the vibration means to come back to me) for when she's far off? Any ideas on how I could do that? Or any other ideas?
Also, as you may have guessed, she's a barker. Theres nothing that makes her not bark, and now that she can't hear, she barks even more (you would think that it would mean she'd bark less? I just figure she wasn'ts ever one else to be deaf too lol). She, and our other two dogs are out side dogs (not my choice, but my mom's. Once I get my own appartment, next year, the other two dogs are coming with me and will live inside. Dont know what mom will do with Licorice), so by the time I can get out side to tell her to stop barking, she's on to me and has gone to pretend she was never doing anything in the first place. So some sort of deaf-dog-friendly correction for this stuborn pain in the butt would be nice too lol
As I come up with other problems I notice, I will ask about them, but recall and correction are my biggest concerns for now. Thanks!
