While the bowl has experienced some melting as it matures, there is a big dead patch of my dwarf sag. I was gone for 11 days and upon returning the entire top was covered in duckweed, I have since removed most of it. Is the duckweed the culprit?

It's possible. Duckweed sucks nutrients out of the water column fast and depending on how much there is block light from reaching the bottom.
