Cycling while setting up

Hey guys, so I'm setting up this 55gal and don't have all the driftwood, rocks, plants, etc. Basically I'm taking my time getting it setup how I'd like. I was wondering if I could add water and let it start cycling while I get it looking how I'd like. I really enjoy having this place as such a resource for information and any knowledge is greatly appreciated! Thanks so much!

Bueller, Bueller? Wondering if you guys are getting my questions? It's not bolded and no replies to the 2 that I've put out there. Many thanx!

You could, and your bacteria growth would happen in the filter sponge. Having substrate would give another place for your good bacteria to grow but it's not 100% needed. You could also get a biostone or similar product to have a "backup" growth spot.

Have you read about the Nitrogen Cycle? Are you planning to do a fish less cycle with added ammonia? If so, then you certainly can keep moving stuff around. However, just running the filter on a tank of water and no ammonia source will not help your tank get ready at all. Short answer : yes, you can keep re-arranging things. But to cycle your tank you will need fish or ammonia as a source.

Yes. Was wanting to get a head start on a fishless cycle while figuring out just how I'd like it to look. Thank you!
