Re: cycleing a ten gallon tank
Do you have a already established tank, if so you can rip part of that filter media and put it in the filter of your new 10 and it will cycle faster. You can also put some gravel in a pany-hoe and hang it below the return part of your filter. If you don't have a established tank you can use bio-spira, pure ammonia, or flake method among others.

I Think my other filter in my established tank is too big. what if I put a live plant in there will that help the nitrogen cycle?

rip part of the large filter off, and put it into the smaller filter in ur 10 gallon. also, make sure u feed the tank because without ammonia for 24 hours the bacteria will start to die. another way is to sprinkle some gravel in the bottom, or even better do what atmmachine said and use a pany-hoe to let the gravel's bacteria go into the filters intake. good luck!

Yeah the decomposing flakes produce ammonia which will feed the new bacteria that will grow. By feeding your tank and seeding it with your old filter, you should be able to cycle that sucker pretty quickly.
