I'm toying with the idea of setting up a 10g to act as a nursery for expected fry and just wondered if I could speed up the cycling process by using the 20% water changed out of my existing setup and adding it to the rest of the volume

Any info is all good at this point, thanks.

Water won't help cycling, what would is taking a piece of the filter from your existing setup and putting that in your filter in the 10g.

The only problem I might find doing that is that they are totally different filter types, I just wondered if it might boost the bacteria build up but thank you :)

You can keep a sponge filter in your main tank (minimum 3-4 weeks to seed) and move it over to the 10 gal when you need it for fry. After the fry leave, put it back in your main tank.

I think I've got one of them stashed away somewhere, I'll dig it out :)
