You can but I would use root tabs. I plan on growing some in the exact same substrate really soon.

I grow them in it without root tabs and they are awesome

Thanks! Do they get their nutrients through roots only? I think they look good and fit my tank well. If youve had luck in the same sand without root tabs, I may give it a shot, as my other plants don't use tabs.

I don't use tabs at all and get great growth

They get nutrients primarily from the roots.

WendtiI is a low tech plant that will grow in engine-oil (joking : don't try) and in all kind if conditions (leaf-shape and color will be different).

They can get nutrients from the water column or/and the substrate. It really doesn't matter as long as you give them all that they need.
