Crooked danio

HI I have a 23 litre fluval edge tank with Danios and minnows and one loach, all of my fish are healthey apart from one danio which is swimming at a 45 degree angle with its nose upwards, it seems to have to swim constantly to keep itself afloat or it sinks. It is not bloated, in fact its really thin compared to the others. It is eating ok I feed them flakes and have just given them some peas and cucumber in case it is constipated, but it is really thin so I don't see how it can be. The others are all absolutely fine. I do have a lot of little snails at the moment which I keep removing. I have 4 different varieties of plants which are all healthy. I'm worried this fish will just die of exhaustion at this rate. Thanks for looking, hope you can help. Barbara

Did you get him like that? Or did he become like that?

Personally, 6 gallons is not enough gallons for danios or any kinds of loaches I know. They are far too active for one.

HI Barbara, First, let me welcome you to Fishlore.
I notice from your aquarium info that you do not know about the Nitrogen Cycle. I would recommend you read up on this at some point as this is one of the most important parts of fishkeeping.
but, to the problem at hand. I am not an expert with diseases and I am sure someone will be along soon that knows more about this. there is a good chance that your danio has a swim bladder issue. if that is the case, before doing anything I would recommend not to feed your fish for a day or two and do a 50% water change. make sure you use a conditioner for the new water.

HI should I move him into a tank by himself or starve them all, Thanks

Hmm, I'm not sure what it could be then. My best guess would be a spinal injury.

I would isolate him in a tank by himself temporarily (With water changes) and see if that helps. Don't starve your fish, that won't really help this situation at all.

not feeding your fish a day or 2 would never starve them. many members on this forum and many others ( including myself) do this on a regular basis. it is not starving them, it's more like fasting, allowing to flush their systems if you will. I would never consider starving my fish.

by not feeding your fish for a day will not starve them, it will give them a chance to flush their systems out. I do this once a month with all my fish.
it will not hurt the others at all and then do a water change which I think in itself is the best medicine for fish.

But never did I say just 2 or a few days.

The OP just said "should I isolate him or starve them" and that was my response.

I know what fasting is, I do it every now and then

One note about the original post. You commented you have a lot of little snails and my thoughts on that are: Snails seem to reproduce a lot faster when we are over feeding and reproduction drops off if they tank is kept clean and the right amount of food is feed. Over feeding can be the cause of a swim bladder problem or constipation and either of those could cause your fish to swim funny. Only feed what the fish can totally eat in less than 3 minutes. If you are feeding more than that you are wasting food but more importantly you are creating a lot of waste in the tank which creates more snails.
