Crayfish question

So I went to my local petco a while ago and discovered they have crayfish for sale and I was intrigued at the idea of a minI lobster as a pet. On the tag at the store it said that their maximum size was 2 inches and that they only required a 10gal tank. So I set up a spare 10gal and got it cycling. I did some research and the same crayfish (that was advertised as a vanilla lobster) online says that they require a 30 gal and get up to 6 inches long, but dwarf crayfish can live in a 10 gal fine. But the cray at the store wasn’t advertised as a dwarf so I’m very confused as to what it needs

Trouble is there are so many kinds with different sizes double check with the store and we'll see what they say 10 for Mexican dwarf is fine but if it's the genuine vanilla then its 30gal

Petco pretty consistently recommends smaller than appropriate enclosures. I've seen those there too, and they aren't dwarfs.

My question with that kinda thing, is you say 30 gallons minimum. But they’re not fish, the more important thing is the footprint. So is that 30 gallons as in a 29? Which has the same footprint as a 20 long, so then is the 20 not also acceptable? Or do you mean a 30 long? Etc. it’s all so wish washy when talking about appropriate tank sizes lol (this isn’t aimed at you, per se, just a gripe I have)

If you go back, get a pick and post it here!

I agree with others in that it likely is not a dwarf crayfish if they are selling it as a vanilla, although it is possible that they mislabeled. You’ll likely want a 30 or larger long term.

I think it depends on how hardy the particular crayfish species is on whether or not you would want more water volume to dilute waste. Higher sides so that the crayfish can climb more could be desirable too. I have some that love to climb to the top of the tank and feast on the floating plants! Also, the same floor plan with lesser volume could easily be done with better filtration or more water changes.

So I guess it just comes down to species and personal preference with maintenance.
