Crayfish Molting Issues

Hello everyone. My blue crayfish finally molted last night. I found him next to his molt this morning. I just found him now and he still has the molt attached to him on his front claw. I gently pulled it off and it slid off with almost no effort. Then I noticed the claw looked deformed. It was just sort of dangling there. I don't know what's wrong with it but it does look very different from the other claw. It's the one on our right, the crayfish's left.

 

It formed improperly. Luckily for crustaceans a molt almost always fixes any problems with the exoskeleton. Just make sure the water is hard and it has a good diet and it should be back to normal by next molt

 

Depending on the severity of injury depends on how long and how many molts until it returns to normal. Like said above make sure the water is on the harder side and a good varied diet.

 

When they first molt their exoskeleton is very soft and fragile. It looks like you tore off the pinchers when you tried to help. He's a bug he'll figure it out eventually, just don't try and intervene next time. The claw will eventually grow back so no big worries there. Also he will eat the old exoskeleton to gain back important minerals so leave it in there for a few days if you haven't gotten rid of it already.

 

Thanks for the replies. I'm even more worried now because this morning the deformed claw is bright pink. It's also very soft but the rest of his shell is firm. What should I do?

 

Just leave it be. The crayfish may tear its own arm off if it finds something is wrong,
