Craigslist-like websites?

Hi,

I just moved to the US from abroad. In my home country we have a website very similar to craigslist that is fairly popular for the aquarium hobby. I lived in a metropolitan area and there were hundreds of people close-by selling fish, aquarium plants, shrimp, snails etc. Here in the US I also live in the city (Boston), but, if I search for aquarium related things on craigslist I get virtually no search results. Is craigslist not the place to go for something like this? Is there another website to locally buy or trade that I'm not aware of?

 

I rehomed a few fish using craigslist but in my mid-size city I don't see much fish related there. Are there are any local aquarium clubs that may have web pages that are more help?

 

Hi! It honestly depends. I don't use craigslist and I don't think it is that popular. On this forum, you can sell, buy, and trade aquarium-related items and animals. You can also buy fish and other things off Petco, PetSmart, and sometimes Amazon websites. There is no trading though. There are probably just fish trading websites. Maybe someone else has used them.

 

Hello, and welcome to the US. I find a fair bit of stuff locally on craigslist by doing separate searches for "fish" and "aquarium", but it that isn't working in your area I believe many people use Facebook marketplace (or something like that; I don't do Facebook).

AquaBid.com - Sell or buy aquarium equipment and fish in an auction format is a website similar to eBay that's just for aquarium related stock and items that you might be interested in. I haven't bought or sold anything there, but I've seen quite a few posts here from people who use it, and I know at least one member here who sells fish there.

That is a good resource, but it isn't accessible until you have 50 messages.

 

You can also find fish breeders and maybe try Ebay?

Right. Yeah, kind of maybe grinded messages to be able to view them. Shhh....

 

The best place I have found in my state is a local forum, took a while to get to it though, had to meet the right people. Second to that is the local aquarium societies facebooks. Then craigslist but it's usually not in the "for sale" section, it's in the community section. You can't "sell" live animals on Craigslist so people "re-home" them, for a fee suspiciously close to a sale price on Craigslist community. Thanks to that shift on policy almost all the aquarium related postings that aren't just a glass box are listed in the community section(on the mobile site you need to select community manually). I also have noticed letgo/OfferUp can be popular but it comes and goes in popularity.
